The legend of Andy Kahl continues to grow.

Already decorated with a gold medal from last summer’s Empire State Games, Kahl, a junior at Cicero-North Syracuse, gained another laurel when he won the high jump during last Saturday’s state indoor track and field championships at Cornell University.

Competing at historic Barton Hall, Kahl got locked in a tight contest with an evenly matched field, as the top eight jumpers in the field were separated by just three inches.

Ultimately, Kahl and Peter Bligh, a Section V rival from Greece Arcadia, flew higher than anyone, each of them clearing 6 feet 7 inches. But Kahl managed to do so with fewer misses, allowing him to go to the top of the medal podium.

Similar success was expected from CNS girls high jumper Monique Roberts — who, like Kahl, is a junior and won at the Empire Games in 2006. Her clearance of 5 feet 11 inches was the best indoor mark in the nation this winter.

At Cornell, though, it did not turn out as well. Roberts did clear 5 feet 6 inches, but could go no higher and had to settle for third place. Dalilah Muhammad (Benjamin Cardozo) won, clearing 5 feet 9 inches with fewer misses than Ketchum’s Brigetta Barrett.

Sommer Cloinger also came home with a bronze medal in the girls shot put. The senior’s best toss of 41 feet 1 1/2 inches beat everyone except star freshman Melissa Kurzdorfer (Section VI, Lancaster), who won with 44 feet 5 1/2 inches, and Betty Williams (Longwood), who was second with 41 feet 9 inches.

In the girls triple jump, Keriann Borke came up with a fine effort, nearly reaching the podium as she got seventh place, her best attempt going 37 feet 4 inches. Gabriealla Baiter (John Glenn) won with 40 feet 1/4 inch.

Before Kahl and his CNS mates went to Ithaca, each of the Northstars’ indoor track teams pulled off one more sweep.

In last Tuesday’s Section III Select Meet, delayed six days by a string of weather-related postponements, the boys Northstars piled up 106 points, more than twice the number of runner-up Clinton, who had 48 points. Baldwinsville (31 points) was a distant third.

Kahl cleared 6 feet 4 inches in the high jump. Nick Orlando ran the 55-meter dash in 6.98 seconds, while Nathan MacNabb won the 1,000-meter event in 2:45.05 and Jeff Azzoto needed 1:25.67 to beat the field in the 600-meter run.

Also, CNS nearly swept the relays. Azzoto, Orlando, Mike Fischer and Zach Marchese teamed up to win the 4×200 (1:35.49), while Marchese returned to join Andy Neumeister, James Thurn and Jake Whritenour to prevail in the 4×400 relay in 3:38.16.

MacNabb, Whirtenour, Kevin Cusworth and Ben Ludovici were second (8:36.92) in the 4×800 relay, as Cusworth also got second in the 3,200 (10:30.76) and Ludovici got third in the mile in 4:31.22.

In field events, Neumeister was third in the triple jump (40 feet 4 inches), while Craig Barber cleared 12 feet 6 inches in the pole vault and Dan Minahan had a third-place shot put toss of 44 feet 3 1/2 inches.

The girls Select Meet was a lot closer, but CNS still pulled it out, earning 72 points to runner-up Liverpool’s total of 51 points. Balwinsville again was third, with 45 points.

Cloinger threw the shot put 39 feet 7 inches for one title, while Gina Campagna took advantage of Roberts’ rest and cleared 5 feet to win the high jump. On the oval, Alicia Finger beat the field in the 3,000-meter run in 10:48.14.

McKaye Neumeister earned second in the triple jump, going 33 feet 5 1/2 inches. She also teamed with Janise Harper, Katie Duerr and Gabby Catania for second (4:11.78) in the 4×400 relay. Lindsay Raulli gained third place in the 1,000-meter run in 3:13.06.
