Amid a close race for the OHSL Liberty division regular-season championship, the Cazenovia girls tennis team could not afford any slip-ups.
And none occurred in last Monday’s match against Westhill, where the Lakers took care of the Warriors in a 6-1 decision.
Laura Gregg preserved her side’s singles sweep by beating Eileen Fleming 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. Kelly Furlong routed Phoebe Langdon 6-1, 6-0, while Elizabeth Palmer handled Katie Ferrara 6-0, 6-4.
Sally Langan and Sienna Lints led the Lakers’ doubles charge with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Adrianna Carello and Bridget Sherlock. Olivia Bowser and Edie Connor handled Casey Hagen and Selina Scutari 6-3, 7-6 as Grace Gara and Rebecca Marsch took out Kathleen Dillon and Anna Pullano 7-5, 6-0. Claire Chanatry and Taylor Mimms lost to Connor Catone and Dana Elleman 7-5, 6-0.
This followed a 5-2 win over Marcellus on Sept. 16. Palmer, beating Daniela Henie 6-3, 6-3, led another singles sweep as Gregg got past Colleen Stapleton 6-3, 6-4 and Furlong took a 6-4, 6-2 win over Haley Randall.
Chanatry and Mimms won a long doubles battle over MaryKate McHale and Genevieve Rao 6-3, 3-6, 10-8. Langan and Lints had an easier time beating Holly Grosholz and Olivia Higgins 6-1, 6-1, though Gara and Marsch lost to Tierney Clark and Grace Hunt 7-6, 2-6, 10-8. Bowser and Connor fell in three sets to Emily Hennigan and Renee Poullott 3-6, 7-5, 7-5.
Chittenango picked up an impressive OHSL Freedom division win over Manlius-Pebble Hill 5-2 last Monday, sweeping all four doubles matches.
McKenzie Doig and Kaleigh Koegel defeated Grace Allyn and Alaina McGinley 6-4, 6-0, with Katie Brant and Shelby Hogan getting a 6-2, 7-6 win over Scarlett Jaworski and Elizabeth Brant.
Camen Hunn and Allyson Mroczek got past Caroline Blanck and Sarah Malavenda 6-3, 6-3 as Danielle Hurley and Jennifer Sternberg beat Christina Cerio and Hailey Lavelle 6-3, 6-4.
Of the three singles matches, the Bears only got one of them, watching Ami Petosa sweep past Alex Verbeck 6-2, 6-2. Kourtney Wilson and Makenzie Mohorter both lost in straight sets to, respectively, Emily Barclay and Hannae Lee.
Then the Bears challenged OHSL Freedom division leader Christian Brothers Academy on Wednesday afternoon before taking a 4-3 defeat to the Brothers.
All the points came in doubles, where Hunn and Mroczek topped Jenna Bartolotti and Shannon Fitch 7-5, 6-2. Brant and Jennifer Sternberg worked past Evie Lopoo and Olivia Rotondo 7-5, 6-1, while Hogan and Hurley paired together, rallying for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Trisha Maini and Eliazabeth Sasser.
Petosa ran into CBA star Olivia Messineo and lost, 6-0, 6-2, while Marie Periello fell to Colleen Cavanaugh 6-0, 6-0. Wilson put a scare into Amanda Ojugbeli, but still lost 7-5, 7-6 as Doig and Koegel also lost to Shilpa Kamani and Becky Scullin 6-4, 6-1.
