If the West Genesee boys golf team wanted a piece of the CNY Counties League and Section III Class AA honors again, it had to start stringing together match victories, especially against opponents whom it was supposed to beat.
Getting that message following a narrow Sept. 10 defeat to Fayetteville-Manlius, the Wildcats met Liverpool last Tuesday afternoon at Westvale, posting the top four individual rounds in a 188-217 win over the Warriors.
Dylan Plis again led the way, shooting a 34 to beat out three others who broke 40. Joe Morgan had a 36, with Nick Bove contributing a 37 and Jack Corcoran a 39 all ahead of Liverpool’s low round of 40 by Tyler Dorfal. Then Derek Pettinelli clinched the meet for the Wildcats with a solid 42.
Against the combined Syracuse City team on Thursday at Drumlin, WG won again, 180-217, as Plis again dazzled with a 32, going under part to hold off Joe Morgan, who had a season-best 34. Bove and Mike DiPaola both shot 37as Jimmy LaValle and Dan Bennetti both managed 40, the same as Syracuse’s Joe Lee, who led his side.
So the Wildcats take a 5-2 record into Tuesday’s crucial match at Timber Banks with CNYCL leader Baldwinsville, looking to avenge a 198-200 defeat to the Bees on Aug. 26 at Westvale, followed two days later by a showdown with Cicero-North Syracuse Blue, a team it beat 188-194 earlier this fall.
Westhil was back in action last Tuesday afternoon, holding off Cortland 212-224 at Camillus Country Club as Anthony Maglisco, with a 40, posted the only total under 40, though the Purple Tigers’ Adam Passalugo did land on that mark to lead his side.
Helping the Warriors get away, the Warriors’ David Blesksoski had a 42, and while Cortland teammate Tyler Zacek and Cooper Swartout both shot 44, so did three Westhill players – Sean Dadey, Tim Alcaro and Nick Sauro.
Going to Drumlins on Friday, Westihill faced Christian Brothers Academy, and took another big step forward by edging the Brothers 216-219.
Even though CBA’s Steve Fournier shot the low individual round of 37, the Warriors had the next three best rounds, with Maglisco again posting a 40, Dadey getting a 41 and Marshall adding a 43 to make up ground.
But it still took Bleskoski shooting a 45 and Alcaro contributing a 48 to hold off the Brothers, who saw Jack Lester shoot a 43, just ahead of David Gross (44), Brent Savage (47) and Guy Germain (48).
With the win, Westhill improved to 6-1 and sat just behind Homer in the OHSL Freedom National division standings, ready for a showdown with the Trojans next Friday – but only after matches against Phoenix, Mexico and Skaneateles.
