Onondaga — The start of 2016 meant it was time for all of the area’s indoor track and field teams to plunge into the heart of their schedule of CNY Indoor Track Association meets at SRC Arena, which included Saturday’s George Constantino Memorial Invitational.
As part of the afternoon session, West Genesee finished second in the girls event with 87 points, trailing only Cicero-North Syracuse (107 points), while Westhill-Bishop Ludden was fifth with 53 points and Marcellus (20 points) was sixth.
Carly Benson put WG in the win column in the first race, the 1,500-meter run, topping the field with a time of four minutes, 48.54 seconds as teammate Emily Young was third in 5:03.53.
Much later, in the 4×200 relay, the Wildcats won as Benson, Kelsey Fox, Megan Delia and Maria Matkoski roared to a time of 1;50.42, well clear of Westhill-Ludden, who had Jayanna Monds, Annibel Coolican, Katherine Doherty and Kendra McCaull finish second in 1:57.65. Benson also joined Alicia Sakran, Madalyn Benson and Avery Rydelek to finish second (4:19.02) to Baldwinsville (4:17.59) in the 4×400 relay, with Westhill-Ludden fourth in 4:45.98 and Marcellus (4:52.16) fifth.
On her own, Matkoski claimed the 600-meter run in 1:40.85, more than three seconds ahead of the field, with Delia needing 43.16 seconds to pull away from Jamesville-DeWitt’s Alexia Carr (44.92 seconds) and win the 300-meter dash before going 16 feet 3 ½ inches to finish second in the long jump.
Kendall Dombroske earned second place in the 3,000-meter run in 11:24.13 and, with Young, Sara Ferranti and Mia Mitchell, finished second in the 4×800 relay in 10:38.06, with Westhill-Ludden’s quartet of Alaina Kenny, Olivia Daigneau, Liz Kessler and Carmelia Carr third in 10:44.92. J’Nazia Anderson was fifth (28’8 ¾”) in the shot put.
Where Westhill-Ludden ruled was in the pole vault, where it went 1-2 thanks to Doherty clearing 10 feet and Noelle Coolican topping 9’6”. Genny Corcoran needed 3:16.80 to beat Alaina Kenny (3:17.81) for third place in the 1,000-meter run, where WG’s Bridget Spiddle was sixth. Monds was sixth in the 55-meter hurdles in 9.79 seconds, while Zoe Fortin took fourth in the long jump, going exactly 15 feet.
continued — Marcellus got most of its points on the girls side from Mary-Catherine Coon, who in 7.82 seconds edged out Carr (7.85 seconds) to win the 55-meter dash, where WG’s Kelsey Fox (7.98 seconds)was fourth. Coon then cleared 4’8” in the high jump to finish second to C-NS’s Brittany House (4’10”) as the Wildcats’ Michela Kahsay (4’6”) was fourth and Westhill-Ludden’s Abby Feyerabend (4’4”) was fifth. Courtney Otis was sixth in the pole vault for the Mustangs.
Meanwhile, in the boys afternoon session, Westhill-Ludden got third place with 47 points, with Marcellus (30 points) fourth and WG tied for ninth (20 points), each of them trailing C-NS (120 points) and Baldwinsville (65 points) in the standings.
Garnet Remillard won the mile for the Warriors in a clocking of 4:36.57, fending off Hannibal’s Jason McFarland (4:37.67) to prevail. Also, Bryan King prevailed in the pole vault, topping 11 feet 6 inches as no one else could top 10 feet, though Ben Eassa (9’6”) tied for third.
Will Ringwood took sixth in the 55 hurdles in 9.08 seconds as Remillard, Ben Hunter, Matt McAnaney and Adam French were fourth in the 4×400 in 4:01.63. McAnaney, Cody Badman, Nick French and Alex Kiley made it to third place in the 4×200 in 1:39.72, with Kiley taking sixth in the high jump by himself.
Marcellus featured Mike Provvidenti going 38.24 seconds to get second place behind C-NS’s Matt Kilian (38.13 seconds) in the 300-meter dash, and also had Mike Keegan clear 5’8” in the high jump to finish third. Sam Stearns cleared 9’6” for fifth place in the pole vault.
Patrick McGuane finished third in the 600 in 1:28.20 as WG’s Russ Graziano (1:29.95) was fifth. McGuane, Ethan Mosure, John Riccardi and Matt Strempel went 9:02.88 in the 4×800, finishing second behind Tully’s 8:53.41.
Half of WG’s point total was earned when David Leff covered 3,200 meters in 9:53.09, winning that race over a field that included Ryan Dunning, who was third in 10:17.64. Leff, Dunning, Graziano and Ryan Desko were fifth in the 4×800.
continued — Earlier in the day, Solvay and Jordan-Elbridge took part in the morning session of the Constantino meet, swept by Fayetteville-Manlius in terms of first-place finishes, but having the Bearcats sixth in the boys meet with 27.5 points and the Eagles sixth with 25 points in the girls meet, two spots ahead of Solvay.
Jacob Hook won the boys shot put for Solvay, his throw of 44 feet 4 inches beating out challengers that included J-E’s Brad Marshall, who was third with a heave of 40’6 ¼”.
Solvay’s best track finish came in the 4×200, where Josh Chrysler, Tony Matsyuk, Jordan Devereaux and Garrett Lee got to third place in a time of 1:42.81. Individually, Chrysler was fifth in the 55 hurdles in 9.39 seconds, while Lee was fifth (19’3 ¾”) in the long jump and did better in the high jump, clearing 5’8” for third place as Matsyuk tied for fifth, topping 5’4”.
For J-E, Ethan Kinney needed 2:56.65 to finish fourth in the 1,000 after he was sixth in the 600.. Hunter Brunelle needed 11:03.12 to earn fifth place in the 3,200. The Eagles also had Patrick Fordyce take sixth (40.72 seconds) in the 300 and finished fifth (9:52.07) in the 4×800.
In the girls morning session, Solvay had all 18 of its points come from a 1-2 sweep in the shot put. Samanatha Waters won it with a toss of 31 feet 10 ½ inches, while Ashley Bosco fit into second place by tossing it 29’7 ¾”.
J-E’s girls did best in the high jump, where Julie Hines was third, clearing 4’8”. The Eagles also had Theresa Dristle (5:18.05) and Emma Burns (5:20.67) finish fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 1,500, with Dristle, who was fifth in the pole vault, also fourth in the 600 in 1:52.12 as Burns got sixth place in 1:53.99.
Madison Daly took fifth place in the 1,000 in 3:31.42, while Madi Hatt was sixth in the 300 in 46.49 seconds as Mary Elizabeth Dristle took fifth (12:08.13) in the 3,000 and the Eagles were sixth in the 4×200 in 1:57.71.
