Skaneateles — A combination of tough regular-season competition and a home-pool advantage at the Community Center made the Skaneateles girls swim team close to unstoppable during Friday’s Section III Class C championship meet.
Earning 415 points, the Lakers earned another sectional team title, well clear of second-place Lowville (293 points), while Thousand Islands finished third with 239 points.
Leah King led Skaneateles, winning twice in individual events. King swam the 50-yard freestyle in 25.56 seconds, more than a second ahead of West Canada Valley’s Jordyn Conte (26.67 seconds), and later would beat the field in the 100 butterfly in 1:02.34, with Cooperstown’s Tessa Griger (1:04.49) the runner-up.
Meanwhile, the Lakers swept all three relay events, going so far as to break the sectional Class C and school record in the 200 medley relay before earning first-place finishes in the 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays.
In the 200 medley, Leah King joined Lily Buchholz, Rose Keady and S Senn to post that record time of 1:57.83, well clear of Cooperstown (2:01.45) and the field.
Then, in the 200 freestyle relay, Senn joined Rachel Teixeira, Grace King and Ashley Drotar as Skaneateles prevailed in 1:49.35 to West Canaaa Valley’s 1:51.10. To close out the relay sweep, Buchholz, Teixeira, Keady and Leah King took the 400 freestyle relay in 3:50.87.
Teixeira would win her own race in the 500 freestyle, posting a time of 5:30.61 to pull away from Holland Patent’s Sarah Harter (5:50.69) in the runner-up spot. Also, Teixeria, in 2:01.35, was just behind Gilfillan (2:00.70) in the 200 freestyle and settled for second place.
Buchholz, on her own, finished second in the 100 freestyle in 55.81 seconds to South Jefferson’s Ashlyn Gilfillan, who won in 54.89 seconds.
