Having risen to no. 6 in the state Class B rankings, the Westhill girls basketball team is roaring into February intent on establishing itself as the undisputed favorite to repeat as Section III Class B champions – while passing a milestone or two along the way.
The Warriors roared past Solvay 56-13 last Tuesday night, so tough on the defensive side that it allowed just a single free throw from the Bearcats over the course of the second and third periods.
Delaney Martin, with 23 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals, led Westhill’s efforts. Mackenzie Martin had 11 points, eight rebounds, two blocks, three steals and three assists, each of them helped by Mary Kate Washburn, who gained 12 assists. Katelyn Karleski had six points as Solvay also lost 46-16 to Chittenango later in the week.
Then, in Friday’s non-league game against Vernon-Verona-Sherrill, the Warriors handled the Red Devils 80-49, a night that proved special on several fronts, and not just because Westhill earned its 13th consecutive victory.
By pouring in a career-best 32 points, Delaney Martin passed 1,000 points for her career, tacking on eight rebounds, five steals and three assists for good measure as the Warriors led 25-10 through one period and kept adding to that margin the rest of the night.
Mackenzie Martin didn’t upstage her older sister, but the freshman still had 21 points and 11 rebounds, plus three assists and three steals. Washburn had a season-best 15 assists, to go with eight rebounds, while Karleski again got six points.
On the same night that Westhill bashed Solvay, Marcellus did the same to the combined ITC/Fowler squad, winning 61-19 as it never let the hosts score more than eight points in any single period.
All nine Mustangs players that saw action got on the scoreboard, with Julia Piorkowski setting the pace thanks to her 14 points. Sydney Lewis had 10 points, while Shannon White (nine points) and Eve Hughes (eight points) were close behind.
Hosting Fulton Friday night, the Mustangs fell to the Red Raiders, 43-32, held to four points in the second quarter and unable to make up a 20-12 halftime deficit. White still had seven points and seven rebounds, with Grace Hoey adding eight points and four rebounds and Hughes getting six points and seven boards. Julia Piorkowski added six rebounds as Nicole Hansen led Fulton with 11 points and Sydney Gilmore added 10 points.
Earlier in the week, it was Jordan-Elbridge taking its turn against Bishop Grimes, and playing on even terms most of the way – but only after a first-quarter blitz by the Cobras that made the entire difference in a 66-47 defeat.
Over the course of the last three periods, the Eagles managed to outscore Grimes, especially in a 21-8 fourth-quarter surge. Emily Somes, with 15 points, led the hosts, while Emily Klock gained eight points. Katie Goodrich and Allison Jennings had six points apiece.
Yet all of that came following an opening period where the Cobras forced numerous turnovers, hit most of its shots and didn’t let up until it had a 29-4 advantage. Azariah Wade, who passed 1,000 career points two days earlier in a loss to Indian River, led Grimes with 15 points, while Brianna Squier had 11 points and Maria Naylor added 10 points.
J-E, who fell to 9-8 on the season, didn’t play again until Friday night, at Hannibal, where it attempted to again clinch a winning regular-season record, but never got close to it in a 50-28 defeat to the Warriors.
Hannibal outscored the Eagles 34-13 in the second and third quarters to take control, getting 15 points from McKenzie Mattison, 13 points from Katie Pitcher and 11 points from Sydney Alton. On J-E”s side, only Alexis Braun, with 13 points, hit double figures as Somes got six points.
