Cazenovia — When it returned to action following the holiday break, the West Genesee boys swim team would rely on its depth in a manner that proved quite productive.
The Wildcats met Fayetteville-Manlius last Friday night at Cazenovia College, the Hornets’ home pool, and swept the top two positions in five different races to pile up points and eventually win by a 100-80 margin.
Dave Whiting got this rolling in the 50-yard freestyle, winning in 22.80 seconds as Nate Gdula was second in 23.80 seconds. It also happened in the 100 butterfly, with Colin Riley getting a victory in 1:04.83 and James Raymonda (1:07.13) in the second spot.
Right after, in the 100 freestyle, Nate Grabowski prevailed in 53.05 seconds, with Evan Tuthill (56.93 seconds) in the runner-up spot. Brian Salmons, in 1:06.77, beat out Dan Pesci (1:09.36) in the 100 backstroke and, in the 100 breaststroke, Ryan Hagadorn earned the victory in 1:06.56, edging out Jackson Craig (1:05.76) at the line.
Earlier, in the 200 medley relay, Whiting, Grabowski, Salmons and Craig set the tone, winning in 1:47.01, as Whiting gained a second individual title in the 500 freestyle in 5:31.67.
Though Tuthill was second (2:10.38) to F-M’s Tanner Eisenhunt (2:07.51) in the 200 freestyle, he paired with Whiting, Grabowski and Raymonda to finish first in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:38.78. Riley, in 2:26.76, was just behind the Hornets’ Ricky Wan (2:26.04) in the 200 individual medley.
With the team win, WG improved to 3-2, and would face the combined Syracuse city team Wednesday before a Friday showdown with unbeaten Jamesville-DeWitt/CBA.
