When the Baldwinsville girls basketball team took its second shot at the reigning power of Cicero-North Syracuse last Monday night, it ended just as the first meeting did at home earlier this season.
The undefeated, state class AA no. 2-ranked Northstars handled the Bees 76-37, an even more lopsided margin than it was back on Dec. 8, when C-NS prevailed 69-35 at the Baker High School Gym.
During the rematch, B’ville (10-6) ran into heavy defensive pressure that the Northstars maintained throughout the first half. As a result, the Bees trailed, 36-13, at intermission and watched as C-NS used a 20-6 sprint through the third quarter to pull further away.
Emily Pascale still had nine points, four assists and three rebounds, while Riley Carlucci amassed 10 rebounds to go with her eight points. Kaylee Lammers had eight points and Mackenzie Hanna six points.
For C-NS, McKayla Roberts led with 17 points, one of four Northstars to reach double figures. Beth Bonin finished with 12 points as Amani Free and reserve Jordyn Francati produced 11 points apiece. Francatti and Roberts both converted on three 3-pointers.
Back home on Friday night, B’ville met Nottingham and completely turned that result around, rolling past the Bulldogs 54-25 as it grabbed the lead from the outset and held Nottingham to two points in the second quarter to extend its margin to 30-10.
Again leading the way, Pascale accumulated 19 points, adding six steals and three assists. Carlucci contributed 10 points and four rebounds as Carolyn Brussel produced eight points and nine rebounds, with Lammers adding seven rebounds and Rachel Foertch producing six points.
As that went on, the Baldwinsville boys basketball team visited Nottingham, who had just suffered a narrow defeat to Utica Proctor 24 hours earlier. Yet the Bulldogs didn’t let that disappointment, nor fatigue, affect its own level of play as it beat the Bees 65-50.
Through the first half, neither side could make any kind of sustained run, leading to a 23-23 tie. All of that changed in the third quarter, though, when Nottingham outscored B’ville 19-11, and didn’t let the Bees respond.
Ryan Gell had a team-high 17 points on B’ville’s side. Jordan Fragale had a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Adam Seguin had eight points and nine rebounds. Casey Pluff contributed six points. Nottingham’s Carthell Flowers dominated in the paint with 18 points and 21 rebounds as Cheiron Thomas earned eight of his 14 points at the foul line and Jevon Jones added 12 points.
B’ville met Horseheads Saturday at Onondaga Community College’s Allyn Hall, and while it was far from a smooth effort, the Bees did get back in the win column, taking out the Blue Devils 57-51.
In fact, B’ville trailed Horseheads throughout the first half, but stayed within range. Only down 33-31 at the break, it limited the Blue Devils to six points in the third quarter and inched into the lead, holding on down the stretch with clutch free-throw shooting from Matt Dickman, who had five of his 11 points at the line.
Fragale had another fine all-around effort, gathering up 20 points, eight assists, four steals and three steals, while Seguin chimed in with 19 points and six rebounds. Mitch Gage added five points and three rebounds.
Then the Bees (5-11) have three more games this week in a four-day span, hosting Corcoran before going to West Genesee and Fayetteville-Manlius and ending the regular season Feb. 9 against Henninger. B’ville’s girls have a shot at avenging its Jan. 5 defeat to F-M in between games against Corcoran and Henninger.
