For a full year, the Jamesville-DeWitt girls swim team waited, knowing that an otherwise perfect 2014 season was ruined by a defeat at West Genesee.
And when the two powers gathered again to open the 2015 campaign on Wednesday night, the Red Rams got its long-awaited victory against the Wildcats, claiming nine of the 12 races, including a relay sweep, and prevailing by a score of 99-83.
To get it started, Sophia Farchione, Meg Parker, Marissa Potamianos and Kate Salvo worked together in the first race, the 200-yard medley relay, and blazed to victory in one minute, 57.74 seconds, with WG second in 2:00.87.
Parker would also claim two individual races. In the 200 individual medley, she held off teammate Meredith Wagner, 2:24.46 to 2:25.43, in a 1-2 J-D effort, and would later swim the 100 breaststroke in 1:14.29 and again, have Wagner finish second in 1:17.84.
Alden Coyne took over during the sprints. In 25.40 seconds, Coyne led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 50 freestyle that included Salvo (26.76 seconds) and Samantha Coombs (26.79 seconds). Then Coyne beat WG’s Becca Kanoza, 55.39 seconds to 56.73, in the 100 freestyle, with Salvo (58.21 seconds) third.
Farchione got into the individual win column in a closely-fought 100 butterfly, where she and Patamianos nearly touched the wall together, but Farchione won in 1:03.96 as Potamianos (1:04.04) had to settle for the runner-up spot.
J-D also went 1-2 in diving, with Megan Alkins prevailing by earning 191.35 points, edging out Hannah Gunther (189.25 points) for that top spot.
Alexis Phillips was second in the 500 freestyle (5:32.26) to WG’s Kaitlin Dunning (5:29.58), with Amelia Hesler second (2:04.25) to Dunning (2:02.53) in the 200 freestyle.
Phillips and Hesler would join Coyne and Emma Galletta to get first place in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:52.99, while Galletta, Coyne, Potamianos and Samantha Coombs worked together in the 200 freestyle relay as the Rams won in 1:45.85, well clear of the Wildcats (1:50.06) in the second spot.
Now J-D would get to wait two weeks before it returned to action again, on Sept. 24, clashing with its neighbors from Christian Brothers Academy at the Le Moyne College pool.
CBA opened its season with a 99-70 victory over Syracuse at the renovated Nottingham High School pool that will return to hosting the Section III championships later this fall. And in a close battle, Fayetteville-Manlius went to Baldwinsville and took a 49-45 defeat to the Bees.
Tessa Queri and Julia Torell each won twice for the Brothers, as Queri claimed the 50 freestyle (26.08 seconds) and 100 freestyle (59.87 seconds), while Torell got first place in the 200 IM (2:18.70) and 100 butterfly (1:04.80).
Katie Toole, in a time of 2:16.77, was victorious in the 200 freestyle before Sam Lanzafame, with 244.55 points, edged Erin Wind (240.40 points) in the diving competition and Annie Fletcher swam the 500 freestyle in 5:44.21.
Fletcher, Queri, Torell and Katelyn Wendt won the 200 medley relay in 2:01.62 to set the tone. Wendt also took second in the 100 freestyle behind Queri as Grace O’Connor was runner-up to Torell in the 100 butterfly.
