It simply isn’t summertime without the Cicero Community Festival. Regardless of what the weather is doing, the Greater Cicero Chamber of Commerce and Drivers Village are hosting the annual celebration of local businesses Friday, June 12, and Saturday, June 13, behind Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Route 11. This year’s theme is “Let the Good Times Roll.”
Steve Becker, one of the festival organizers, said the idea of the 23-year-old festival sprang from the chamber’s motto: “where community meets commerce.” He called the festival a “cross-section” of the greater Cicero community. The festival draws about 7,000 people each year.
“It’s not a field days, it’s more of a community coming together,” Becker said.
This year, the Cicero Community Festival will raise money for Griffin’s Guardians with the “Brave and Strong Firetruck Pull.” Cicero Police Officer John Cottrell will pull a firetruck in honor of Griffin Engle, who passed away last year at age 7 after a battle with glioblastoma multiforme, a rare type of brain cancer. Griffin’s mother, Erin Engle, started a foundation to help pediatric cancer patients at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital and raise awareness and money for research.
The Cicero Community Festival will also raise money for Joseph’s House, a Catholic home in Syracuse for women facing unplanned pregnancy.
“That’s a whole part of the chamber — giving back to the community,” Becker said. “The chamber is made up of business owners who may not live in Cicero but do business there.”
One highlight of the festival is the 13th annual Cruise Night, which opens the festival at 5 p.m. Friday.
“When the weather is beautiful, we have over 300 cars that will be coming out,” Becker said.
After the cruise night, Rochester-based rockers Ruby Shooz will perform their favorite tunes from the 1950s and ‘60s.
On Saturday morning, TK99 morning show co-host and Cicero resident Glen “Gomez” Adams will serve as grand marshal of the “Let the Good Times Roll!” Parade, which is sponsored by Syracuse University.
Adams is one of a series of local celebrities with a Cicero connection who’s been honored at the festival. Previous honorees include retired CNY Central anchor Jackie Robinson and 93Q morning show co-host Amy Robbins. Last year, the grand marshal was the late Joe Galuski, the longtime WSYR radio host who died of non-Hodgkins lymphoma last month.
The youngest Cicero residents will get to enjoy games, inflatables and other activities in the Fun Zone. There will also be live music, dance and martial arts demonstrations throughout the day.
The festival also features a variety of local businesses and crafters at the Cicero Community Craft and Business Show. Adams will present awards for the parade and the chamber at 2:45 p.m. Saturday.
CMC Dance Company is hosting the Cicero Star Search Competition at 3:15 p.m. Saturday. To enter the contest, call 699-2355.
Saturday’s fun wraps up at 10:15 p.m. with fireworks sponsored by Price Chopper.
“It’s nice when you see people come out for the fireworks,” Becker said.
