Politics can be unpredictable, but not here in Liverpool.
For most of this young century village candidates have run unopposed, and that’s the way it will be when voters cast their ballots June 16, at the Village Hall.
Three-term Mayor Gary White and five-term Trustee Dennis Hebert, both Republicans, are seeking re-election.
Meanwhile Christina Fadden Fitch, a member of the village Zoning Board of Appeals, was nominated at the April 27 GOP Village Caucus to run for the trustee seat being vacated by three-term Trustee Bob Gaetano, who declined to run so he can spend more time with his family.
White, retired as a deputy chief for the Syracuse Police Department, now works as a consultant in the light manufacturing industry. After serving six terms as a trustee White’s first run for mayor, in 2009, was uncontested. He overcame an independent challenge by Tom Stack in 2011 and ran unopposed in 2013.
Hebert, a trustee since 2007, works as a senior financial planner with Blue Ocean Strategic Capital from his office at 209 Second Street.
Fadden Fitch, a seven-year member of the village Zoning Board of Appeals, is a former legislative director for the NYS Right to Life Committee, and now works as a community-relations coordinator with Brown & Sanford Consulting for Honeywell International on the Onondaga Lake Superfund cleanup and corporate citizenship programs.
Trustees serve two-year terms and are paid $4,000 annually. The mayor also serves a two-year term and earns $8,500 per year.
The two other incumbent trustees, Deputy Mayor Nick Kochan and Jim Rosier, are also Republicans.
According to the Onondaga County Board of Elections, there are presently 470 registered Democrats in the village, 482 Republicans, 438 not enrolled in any party, 92 Independents, 27 Conservatives, five Working Families Party members, three Green Party members and two Libertarians, for a total of 1,519 eligible voters.
No independent candidates filed petitions with the village clerk by this year’s May 12 deadline. Democrats have not fielded a candidate for village office since 2001.
This year’s election is scheduled for noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday, June 16, at the Village Hall, 310 Sycamore St.
