Jamesville-DeWitt’s softball team completed a regular-season sweep of East Syracuse Minoa last Wednesday afternoon, earning an 8-4 victory over the Spartans, and then 24 hours later the Red Rams finished off another sweep when Amanda Sumida threw a no-hitter and shut out Christian Brothers Academy 4-0.
The game between J-D and ESM went back and forth, with an exchange of first-inning runs before the Red Rams scored twice in the top of the third, only to see ESM counter with three runs in the fifth and grab a 4-3 lead.
All that seemed to do, though, was awaken J-D, who got to Spartans pitcher Michelle Burgun for four runs in the top of the sixth, plus a run in the seventh. Paige Sherling led with two hits and two RBIs, with Makenzie Keeler and Alyssa Robens adding two hits apiece. Keeler, Hannah Gunther and Shayna Myshrall had one RBI apiece.
On ESM’s side, Tiffany Evans had two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs, with Amanda Goodhines also driving in a run. Yet it could not produce in the late going against J-D’s pitching tandem of Sumida and Myshrall, who combined to hold the Spartans to five hits.
Just 24 hours later, J-D was at CBA, and Sumida picked a good time to unleash the best pitching performance of her varsity career. Though Annie Carhart walked twice, and Gabby Damico and Claire Pierret also picked up walks, Sumida struck out five and kept the Brothers out of the hit column.
At the plate, J-D broke through against Julia Boule with a run in the third, but didn’t feel safe until a three-run sixth inning. Sherling singled, doubled and drove in a run, while Gunther also had two hits. Keeler, Sumida and Emily Clapper joined Sherling in the run-scoring column.
Before all this (which included Saturday’s 5-4 non-league defeat to Rochester Mercy), J-D was happy to break out in last Tuesday’s game against Fulton, dominating from start to finish in a 16-2 victory over the Red Raiders.
An early 1-0 deficit vanished when the Red Rams plated five runs in the bottom of the second. Four more runs followed in the third and fifth innings, plus a seven-run sixth as Sumida and Myshrall combined to hold Fulton to six hits.
Among J-D’s 16 hits was a Robens solo home run. Keeler and Carly O’Hern, each with three hits and four RBIs, led the way as Myshrall drove in a pair of runs. Sumida also got three hits and scored three times as Emily Clapper had two hits, joining Paige Sherling with single RBIs.
While that was going on, CBA was getting hit hard by Mexico in a 15-2 defeat, the Tigers scoring all of its runs in the first four innings, including a seven-run third.
The Brothers didn’t get on the board until the bottom of the seventh, with Pierret’s triple producing an RBI as she and Hannah Morris scored the runs. The Tigers’ Kalen Hyde hit two home runs and got five RBIs, with Lamb also going deep and driving in four runs.
CBA lost again in a tight 2-1 decision to Marcellus on Wednesday afternoon. Marcellus got to Boule for single runs in the second and fourth innings, driven in on hits by Alyssa Cook and Kristin Field that scored Jayme Lema and Sydney Lewis.
Pierret drove home Bridget O’Hern in the sixth, but Marcellus would allow nothing more, Laura Finn limiting the to four hits, two of them by O’Hern, and two walks while earning five strikeouts. Boule held Marcellus to six hits, striking out four.
After the loss to J-D, ESM fell again on Thursday, taking an 8-2 defeat to Fulton where the Red Raiders broke out of a 1-1 tie with seven unanswered runs in the fourth through sixth innings. Only Cassie Gabrinski got two hits on the Spartans’ side.
But the Spartans beat Cortland 3-1 on Friday, scoring twice in the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie. Michelle Burgun struck out five in her complete-game effort, holding the Purple Tigers to five hits, while Aubrey Williams and Brittany Evans each got two hits and Williams scored twice.
Bishop Grimes did not resume until Thursday, when it stunned Fabius-Pompey 8-6. It all looked over when the Cobras trailed, 6-1, going to the seventh inning, but somehow Grimes put things together and rocked Falcons pitcher Maddy Smith with a seven-run rally to pull it out.
KayLee Steiner led the comeback, earning a double and getting three RBIs. Jordan Vaught added two hits and two RBIs, with Danielle Erwin, Maria Gronau and Kendall Mancuso earning one RBI apiece. Brianna Squier pitched a complete game, never letting F-P put a big inning together to keep it close until the late Cobras comeback.
More drama followed in Friday’s 9-6 win over LaFayette, where Grimes saw a 6-1 lead melt away as the Lancers scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth, only to recover by landing three runs in the top of the seventh to move ahead for good. Steiner, Squier and Gronau each finished with two hits and two runs scored.
