Jamesville-DeWitt and Christian Brothers Academy had their boys tennis showdown last Monday afternoon, both of them entering the match unbeaten – but only the Red Rams staying that way, handling the Brothers 5-0.
None of the five matches went beyond two sets. In singles, J-D’s Robert Dotterer put away Dean Vlassis 6-1, 6-0, while Alex Tso turned back Greg Maziuk 6-2, 6-2 and Ishan Gajra earning a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Jameson Keppeler.
On the doubles side, Jake Cline and Josh Frank survived a tough first set to defeat Steve Castellini and Tommy Daviau 7-6 (7-2), 6-1, while David Benaroch and Josh Rothenberg rolled past Geoff Parkes and Josh Popp 6-0, 6-1.
Both sides went on to wins later in the week. J-D hammered Chittenango 7-0 on Wednesday, with Tyler Lux going through the toughest singles match, beating Colton Stelakis 6-4, 6-2 as Dotterer, Rothenberg and Benaroch all won in two sets. In doubles, the teams of Gajra-Tso, Cline-Frank and Somil Aggarwal-Harshal Nanavati also had straight-set victories.
During Thursday’s 7-0 shutout over Cortland, Gajra survived a 7-5, 6-2 singles battle with Brian Ordway, but otherwise Tso, Cline and Ethan DellaPosta lost just five games in six total sets of singles play. Frank paired with Robert Dotterer for a 6-1, 6-1 doubles win over Ben Condit and Garrett Reagan. The teams of Benaroch-Rothenberg and Brian Cieplicki-Patick Saba also won in two sets.
Then on Friday, when J-D met its other neighbors from East Syracuse Minoa, it prevailed again, by a 6-1 margin, only giving up a point when Benaroch and Tso fell to Tyler Underwood and Brandon Stone 6-0, 6-0.
Otherwise, none of the other Red Rams even surrendered a game, from Dotterer, Rothenberg and Lux in singles against Brett Dufore, Bryant Pham and Tristan McNeil to Aggarwal and Nanavati in doubles, who beat Alan Ayoub and Kelvin Cheng 6-0, 6-0.
CBA handled Skaneateles 4-1 on Tuesday, seeing Vlassis beat Connor Jones 6-0, 6-2, Maziuk stop Ethan Weldon 6-0, 6-1 and Keppeler rout Connor Driscoll 6-2, 6-0. In doubles, Castellini and Daviau got past Zach Driscoll and Anthony Panasci 6-3, 6-1 as Parkes and Popp lost a three-set decision to Ryan Baily and Malcolm Lombardi 7-5, 2-6, 6-2.
Off until Friday, the Brothers didn’t lose any rhythm when it returned, handling Westhill 5-0. Vlassis, Maziuk and Keppeler dropped four games between them in singles play, while in doubles Castellini and Daviau beat Ballard Ballard and Brian Sheridan 6-0, 7-5, with Popp and Milan Gupta topping Colin Catone and Noah Rolince 7-5, 6-2.
Fayetteville-Manlius boys tennis team still had not played many matches prior to last week’s action, but made up for it in a hurry, extending its win streak that is nearing 250 straight matches.
During last Monday’s 7-0 shutout over Cicero-North Syracuse, the Hornets saw the singles trio of Josh Druger, Riley Ma and Jeremy Zhang not give up a game in any of their 6-0, 6-0 wins over, respectively, Rich Dennis, Kavin Inthirakot and Ryan Grenninger.
Meanwhile, on the doubles side, Taran Judge and Chris Lansing beat Connor Doren and Brian Emgolz 7-5, 6-0, with Ravi Dhawan and Vince Grasso beating Andrew Hughs and Kyle Spivalk by those exact same scores. Dhawan also paired with Richard Wang in a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Jack Irwin and Nate Perrotta.
Two days later, during a 7-0 sweep of Liverpool, the Hornets saw Druger and Ma surrender one game apiece in equal 6-1, 6-0 wins over, respectively, Aaron Laviolette and Evan Maestri, while Zhang worked a bit longer, but beat Mike Fensken 6-3, 6-1.
Again, Dhawan and Grasso were challenged a bit in doubles, but still beat Leon Truong and Mitch Virkler 6-2, 7-5. Dilan Judge and Michael Miller beat Adam Reed and Michael Sill 6-1, 6-4, with Lansing and Taran Judge handling Sam Min and Evan Vogue 6-1, 6-2. James DeSorbo and Vincent Sorrentino defeated Logan Erenzillo and Griffin Watson 6-2, 6-1.
The week ended with F-M getting yet another 7-0 decision, this one over Syracuse West, with two singles matches forfeited and Druger beating William DeJesus 6-0, 6-0. The four doubles matches all ended in straight-set Hornets victories, too.
Manlius-Pebble Hill and Bishop Grimes had their head-to-head meeting last Tuesday afternoon, with the Trojans sweeping all of the singles matches in a 4-1 victory over the Cobras.
Neither Andrew Mariados nor Ryley Amond lost a single game, Mariados defeating Raju McMonagale 6-0, 6-0 and Amond handling Clemente Rufo by those same scores. Ini Oguntola contributed a 6-0, 6-2 win over Noah Fiacchi.
The Cobras earned its lone point when Dan Ostaszewski and Knox Wolaver, normally singles players, paired up to beat Christian Meier and Tim Reddy in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 6-0. MPH countered with Max Charlamb and Phillip Kim getting past William Hahn and Mario Perez 6-2, 6-2.
Grimes could not stop undefeated Cazenovia in Thursday’s 5-0 defeat to the Lakers. Ostaszewski had the closest singles match, taking a 6-2, 6-4 defeat to Wyatt Lansing, with Miller and Wolaver also beaten in two sets. Fiacchi and McMonagle played in doubles and had their own 6-2, 6-4 loss to Tim Kempton and David Marshall.
But the Cobras rebounded to beat LaFayette by that same 5-0 margin on Friday. Wolaver rallied in singles past Tanner Fitzpatrick 3-6, 6-1, 6-0, with Ostaszewski stopping Evan Pelton 6-1, 6-2 and Zach Schel beating Devon Scott by those same scores.
In doubles, Hahn and Perez beat Sophia Powless and Kevin Williams 6-1, 6-4, with Fiacchi and Hahn stopping Jessa Albro and Caleb Gretsky 6-0, 6-1.
