The Jamesville-DeWitt/CBA boys swim team got just what it wanted out of its efforts at last weekend’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship meet at Ithaca College.
In nearly every race it entered, the Red Rams set new personal or season marks, peaking with an appearance in the main final of the 200-yard freestyle relay, and was ninth in the team standings, one spot ahead of rival Liverpool, who was 10th.
During the qualifying round of the 200 free relay, J-D/CBA’s quartet of Casey Sawyer, Jeff Gabriel, Kevin Potocki and Cory Knapp had a time of 1:27.66, tying them for seventh place. Not only did that beat out Watertown (1:27.91) and Liverpool (1:27.98), it also put the Rams into Saturday’s main final.
Once there, Sawyer, Gabriel, Potocki and Knapp managed to improve to 1:27.08, breaking a school record that stood for 34 years and finishing fourth in the public-school portion of the state meet, and sixth overall. Brockport won the NYSPHSAA title in 1:25.21, with Fordham Prep (1:24.92) claiming the Federation championship.
That same quartet went to the 400 freestyle relay and went nearly two seconds faster, from 3:17.43 to 3:15.66, which put them 12th going into the finals. Potocki went 48.60 seconds, Gabriel went 50.95 seconds, Sawyer went 49.02 seconds and Knapp anchored with 47.09 seconds.
With a slight improvement to 3:15.55 in the finals, J-D/CBA finished eighth in the public-school portion of the 400 free relay, won by Garden City in 3:12.56.
Knapp, on his own, did quite well in the 50 freestyle. Starting out in 24th place (21.91 seconds), he improved to 21.53 seconds to give him a berth in the consolation race, where his time of 21.46 seconds put him in ninth place in the NYSPHSAA division and 10th overall.
Later, in the 100 freestyle, Knapp went from 48.37 seconds in the 100 freestyle to 47.59 seconds, putting him in 18th place, 14 spots better than where he started, while Potocki was 33rd in 48.48 seconds. In the final, Knapp, in 47.69 seconds, was 11th among public-school swimmers, 20th overall.
Sawyer had reason to be proud, too. Just 35th going into the 100 butterfly with a time of 53.54 seconds, he improved nearly a full second, to 52.53 seconds, and then took a greater leap in the consolation round to 52.02 seconds to finish ninth in the public-school division and 17th overall.
During the diving competition, J-D/CBA’s Alex Dieroff, with 473.50 points, edged out Matt Wanamaker (469.05 points) each were unable to reach the finals, where Mexico’s Noah Galuzzo finished fifth with 524 points and Brighton’s Scott Lazeroff (609.80 points) won.
In addition to helping in both relays, Potocki received the NYSPHSAA Good Sportsmanship Award for his efforts in and out of the pool.
