Instead of repeating its sweep of the Section III championship meets that it enjoyed in 2013, the Jamesville-DeWitt girls swim team found itself upended at the Class B level by host New Hartford in Friday night’s sectional meet.
With a total of 463 points, the Red Rams finished ahead of Christian Brothers Academy’s third-place total of 338 points, but was just behind the Spartans, who pulled out the sectional championship by picking up 468 points.
Early on, J-D had the lead, as in the 200 medley relay Alden Coyne, Hayley Schultz, Marissa Potamianos and Sophia Farchione put up a time of one minute, 51.26 seconds to qualify for the Nov. 22-23 state meet at Ithaca College. CBA’s quartet of Annie Fletcher, Julia Torell, Beth Lumia and Tessa Queri were second in 1:57.38, with New Hartford third.
Coyne would sweep the sprints on her own. In 24.31 seconds, Coyne pulled away to win the 50 freestyle and qualified for the state meet, with Queri fifth (26.20 seconds) and Samantha Coombs (26.72 seconds) eighth.
Later, in the 100 freestyle, Coyne again proved far too good for the field, needing 53.08 seconds to earn a state meet berth, nearly three seconds ahead of General Brown’s Ashlynn Gilfillan (55.92 seconds), while Coombs was sixth in 57.33 seconds, ahead of Queri in eighth (59.17 seconds) and Molly Oyer (59.75 seconds) in ninth place.
One more win came for Coyne in the 200 medley relay, where J-D’s quartet of Coyne, Potamianos, Coombs and Meg Parker had a time of 1:41.93, a second ahead of New Hartford’s 1:42.92, with Lumia, Queri, Oyer and Ierlan putting CBA (1:50.35) in fourth place.
Torell got two victories of her own. She prevailed in the 200 individual medley, posting a time of 2:15.91 to edge out Farchione, who was second in 2:16.46. Parker was fourth (2:20.70) and Meredith Wagner sixth (2:23.56) on J-D’s side.
Moving to the 100 butterfly, Torell held off Schultz, 1:00.20 to 1:00.89, for her second win, with Potamianos getting to fourth place in 1:02.74 and the Brothers’ Grace O’Connor (1:10.38) ninth. But Schultz would prevail in the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.69, qualifying for the state meet ahead of Parker (1:10.99) in second place.
Annie Fletcher prevailed for CBA in the 500 freestyle, but it took the entire distance for Fletcher, in a time of 5:20.94, to fight off Phillips, who was second in 5:21.66, less than a second behind. Wagner tacked on a fifth-place finish in 5:36.72 as the Brothers’ Katie Toole (5:44.20) was eighth.
Not long after that, Fletcher earned her second win in the 100 backstroke, which proved even closer. In a clocking of 1:00.63, Fletcher touched the wall just ahead of Farchione, who was second in 1:00.70 as her teammate, Emilee Carpenter, finished fifth in 1:11.11.
Potamianos was second (2:00.56) behind New Hartford’s Alexis Falvo (1:57.41) in the 200 freestyle, with J-D’s Alexis Phillips fourth in 2:03.17. Toole (2:07.59) and Mary Frances Ierlan (2:11.79) were seventh and ninth, respectively.
Despite all this, New Hartford kept accumulating points in each race, and in the decisive 400 freestyle relay, the Spartans, one point behind, went to the front by winning in 3:40.94 as Phillips, Coombs, Parker and Schultz settled for second place in 3:45.63. Torell, Toole, Ierlan and Fletcher had the Brothers finish third in 3:58.21.
During the sectional Class A meet at West Genesee, Fayetteville-Manlius saw Sophie Fowler post 1:14.99 in the 100 breaststroke and get to sixth place, adding a 10th in the 200 IM.
Grace Garver, in 1:06.54, rose to seventh place in then 100 butterfly. Sarah Robinson was 10th in the 50 freestyle and Christina Burnam 10th in the 100 backstroke. F-M’s best relay finish was in the 400 freestyle, where Fowler, Amelia Krouse, Allie Alcott and Abbey Harris posted 4:05.87.
