Whether with lots of experience, like Liverpool’s Sydnie Sovinsky and Madeline Murphy, or full of youthful promise, like Cicero-North Syracuse’s Jamie Rolf, local girls swimmers found lots of success during Friday night’s Section III Class A championship meet at West Genesee.
But it was the Northstars faring best on the team side, getting 344 points and nearly upending the host West Genesee Wildcats, who repeated its sectional Class A title with 364 points. Liverpool had 334 points, just behind Oswego (336 points) for third place.
Sovinsky won twice, starting with the 200-yard individual medley, where in two minutes, 13.14 seconds she pulled away from a field that included Fedi, who got to second place in 2:18.99, and Jamie Rolf, Fedi’s teammate, who was third in 2:23.52. Claire Donovan was eighth (2:27.02) with two more C-NS swimmers, Carla Champagne (2:26.41) and Kelly Festa (2:27.98), in between her.
Later, in the 500 freestyle, Sovinsky’s time of 5:19.07 was nearly eight seconds better than C-NS’s Lauren Thorne, who in 5:27.01 earned the runner-up spot. Sovinsky’s teammates, Julia Telesca (5:38.85) and Stephanie Adams (5:45.44), were sixth and seventh, respectively, and Donovan finished 11th. Thorne had already taken fifth place in the 200 freestyle in 2:02.94, with Sarah Walter eighth.
Rolf’s victory came in the 100 breaststroke. In a tight duel with Baldwinsville’s Lauren Burchill, Rolf touched the wall in 1:12.07, inches ahead of Burchill, who got second place in 1:12.17. Fedi finished third in 1:14.21.
Murphy earned her lone title in the 50 freestyle, speeding to first place in 24.46 seconds to beat out Oswego’s Mariah Metcalf (24.84 seconds), though both qualified for the state meet. C-NS’s Kiersten Coates (27.43 seconds) took seventh place.
On the other hand, Murphy had to settle for third place in the 100 freestyle, though her time of 54 seconds flat qualified her for the state meet. WG’s Olivia Castro, the meet’s Most Outstanding Swimmer (she had already set a school record in the 200 freestyle), won in a pool-record 52.51 seconds and Oswego’s Mariah Metcalf (53.54 seconds) was second.
Breanna Ruffrage also had a second-place finish, in the 100 backstroke, getting to a time of 1:03.55 that only West Genesee’s Shannon Cahalan (1:01.54) could top. Carla Champagne gave the Northstars a fifth-place finish in 1:04.72, with Liverpool’s Libby Corlett (1:07.04) seventh. Sarah Piraino was eighth in the 100 butterfly in 1:08.59 and 11th in the 50 freestyle.
Neither Liverpool nor C-NS would win a relay. In the 200 medley, Sovinsky, Corlett, Murphy and Maddie Rose had the Warriors second in 1:55.17, with Oswego prevailing in 1:51.27 as Ruffrage, Festa, Rolf and Coates put the Northstars (2:00.18) in fifth place.
Liverpool also saw Murphy, Sovinsky, Corlett and Julia Telesca gain second place in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:45.96 behind Oswego (1:40.24) as Ruffrage, Thorne, Walter and Bethan Rheinbolt gained third place in 1:47.76.
And in the 400 freestyle relay, C-NS had Fedi, Thorne, Walter and Coates take third place in 3:55.01, with Liverpool sixth (4:03.09) as WG won again in 3:45.23 en route to another sectional team title.
