Another week brought another showdown for the Fayetteville-Manlius cross country teams – only this time, it was the girls taking the spotlight.
Atop the state Class A rankings again, the Hornets would face no. 5-ranked West Genesee and no. 10-ranked Cicero-North Syracuse Wednesday on the Wildcats’ home course in Camillus, and beat them both, handling the Northstars 15-50 and the Wildcats 19-43.
Annika Avery was satisfied, too, after surviving a terrific one-on-one battle with WG’s Carly Benson. In a time of 18 minutes, 15.9 seconds, Avery beat Benson (18:19.3) by 3.4 seconds.
Sophie Ryan led the next group, taking third place in 18:48.3. Jenna Farrell was fourth, in 19:01.5, followed by Samantha Levy (19:10.1), Olivia Ryan (19:22.0) and Reilly Madsen (19:29.6), with Megan Menz (19:50.4) and Jessica Howe (20:02.4) also recording top-10 finishes.
It was also a feast for F-M’s boys cross country side, who beat West Genesee 17-44 and C-NS 15-49 as its top three runners all broke the course record.
Billy Gabriel’s old mark of 16:15.7 fell when Bryce Millar prevailed in 16:03.7, just ahead of Peter Ryan (16:04.3) in second place, with Kyle Barber needing 16:13.8 to finish third.
Riley Hughes got fourth in 16:18 flat, with Patrick Perry (16:53.9) and Jon Abbott (16:56.2) eighth and ninth, respectively, and Joseph Walters (17:26.0) in 10th place.
Jamesville-DeWitt would greet OHSL Freedom division newcomer Marcellus with a 17-43 win in a girls three-way meet that also saw the Red Rams defeat Mexico.
In exactly 20 minutes, Rachel Fairbanks led a top-four J-D sweep, with Samantha Jaffe second in 20:37, followed by Kim Walsh (20:43) and Catherine Keane (20:44) in the third and fourth spots ahead of the Mustangs’ top runner, Emily Townsend (20:46). To add further depth, Kelsey Kissane got seventh place in 21:16, just ahead of Ayla Erwin (21:21) and Alisa Salbert (21:40).
Moving to the boys meet, J-D fought past Marcellus 25-30 and handled Mexico 19-44, seeing Patrick Dye finish in 15:27 to beat out the Mustangs’ Patrick McGuane (15:47) for individual honors.
Brady Wing made his way to fourth place in 17:01, but though Marcellus had three of the top six finishers, Miles Chandler (17:32), Matt Saibert (17:39) and Matt Murad (17:47) got the seventh through ninth spots to help the Red Rams prevail.
As that went on, East Syracuse-Minoa’s girls team got a sweep of its own three-way meet on the girls side, defeating Fulton 17-46 and handling Oswego 24-31.
At Pine Grove, Natalie Marra and Cindy Brownson ran together, with Marra winning in a time of 21:27 and Brownson (21:29) two seconds behind as the Buccaneers’ Grace Gilbert (22:37) was third.
Megan Vanderwerker took fourth place, in 23:37, but the Spartans didn’t pull away until Savanna Taylor (24:46) and Makaila White (24:53) took the ninth and 10th spots, respectively, to fend off Oswego’s challenge.
By contrast, ESM’s boys lost to Oswego (26-31) and Fulton (20-41). The Red Raiders snagged four of the top five spots, with Jared Henry the lone exception as he finished second, in 18:18, to Fulton’s Bailey Lutz, who won in 17:50. Matt Young, in sixth place (18:43), was the Spartans’ only other top-10 finisher.
CBA’s girls team opened in the OHSL Liberty division by going to Cazenovia last Wednesday and taking a 15-51 defeat to the Lakers, while the boys lost, 15-50, even though Tom Culleton made his way to fifth place in 20:15 and Brendan Keeney finished sixth in 20:30.
