Facing a challenger for Onondaga High School League supremacy, the Jamesville-DeWitt girls team was up to that threat.
The Red Rams, piling up points through top-three sweeps in two different events, overcame the individual brilliance of Oswego in Wednesday’s meet, putting together a 100-84 victory over the Buccaneers.
Oswego, who had moved from the CNY Counties League this fall, had plenty of top-line talent, including Caitlin Gorton, who won the 200 freestyle (2:03.1) and 100 butterfly (59.4 seconds), and Mariah Metcalf, who took first in the 100 freestyle in 55.2 seconds. The Bucs would also get first-place finishes in all three relay races.
But J-D had plenty of answers, including Alden Coyne, who beat Metcalf, 25.2 seconds to 25.5, in the 50 freestyle, but its real weapon was how it could place groups of good swimmers in strong events and use the points to pull away.
That included the 200 individual medley, where Meg Parker won in 2:25.1, ahead of Sophia Farchione (2:29.8) and Meredith Wagner (2:31.4), and the diving competition, where J-D grabbed the top four spots. Jessica Rieger won with 204.5 points, followed by Hannah Gunther (197.15 points), Anna Skandalis (180.65 points) and Megan Alkins (178.4 points).
On her own, Farchione claimed the 100 backstroke in 1:06.43, while Parker finished second (1:15.1) to Hayley Schultz (1:10.55) in the 100 breaststroke. In yet another J-D 1-2 finish, Alexis Phillips, in 5:41.7, beat Wagner (5:48.4) in the 500 freestyle.
Not far away, at Le Moyne College, Christian Brothers Academy took the measure of West Genesee and, while finding a fair amount of individual success, could not match the depth of the undefeated Wildcats, taking a 102-82 defeat.
Annie Fletcher claimed a pair of races, starting with the 200 freestyle, where in 2:04.23 she topped WG’s Kaitlin Dunning (2:07.27), and followed it up with another victory in the 500 freestyle, where in 5:29.07 she again left Dunning (5:34.44) in the runner-up spot.
CBA went 1-2 in diving, where Sam Lanzafame accumulated 232.45 points to hold off teammate Erin Wind, who was second with 221.85 points. Later, in the 100 breaststroke, Beth Lumia won in 1:22.96, with Katelyn Wendt (1:24.92) in the second spot.
Julia Torell, who lost a close 200 IM race to WG’s Shannon Cahalan (2:21.67 to Torrell’s 2:20.25), rebounded by winning the 100 butterfly in 1:02.38, edging Cahalan’s 1:02.62.
For the victorious Wildcats, Olivia Castro swept the 50 and 100 freestyle, beating Tessa Queri, 25.27 seconds to 26.04, in the first of those events. WG also took two of three relays, only giving up the 400 freestyle, where Fletcher, Queri, Torell and Katie Toole won in 4:03.84.
J-D swam again on Friday and defeated Auburn 94-76, as Coyne moved to the 200 freestyle and won it in 2:02.96, with Phillips taking the 200 IM (2:32.00) and Potamianos, in 1:05.22, joining Parker (1:09.06) for a 1-2 finish in the 100 butterfly.
Wagner, who won the 100 breaststroke in 1:19.90, joined Parker, Potamianos and Jamie Boeheim as J-D swam the 200 medley relay in 2:06.95, with Farchione, Parker, Schultz and Samantha Coombs prevailing in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:50.34. Coombs also was second in the 500 freestyle, with Coyne and Schultz both posting 1:11.30 in the 100 backstroke.
Fayetteville-Manlius struggled last Wednesday in a 102.5-73.5 defeat to Liverpool. Grace Garver wa second in the 100 butterfly in 1:12.70, with Abbey Harris second in the 100 freestyle in 1:03.34. Sophie Fowler took second in the 200 IM (2:17.19) as Riley Miller got 193.15 points in diving for yet another runner-up finish. Christina Burnam was second (1:12.59) in the 100 backstroke.
