With one more chance to compete together this spring, the Cazenovia boys track and field team got victories from juniors Walker Nichols and Sean Satchwell, plus a title from its 4×100 relay team, during the Section III Class B-1 championship meet, held Thursday at Marcellus High School.
Individually, Nichols earned two titles, starting in the 110-meter high hurdles, where he finished in 16.23 seconds to beat Holland Patent’s Dylan Blier (16.52 seconds) and the rest of the field.
Then, in the long jump, Nichols prevailed again, going 20 feet 4 ½ inches, the only effort beyond 20 feet by any of the competitors as Phoenix’s Dylan Doupe (19’4”) took the runner-up spot.
In the high jump, Nichols cleared 5’10”, tying for second behind Phoenix’s Shaun Turner, who won by clearing 6 feet.
Not content with that, though, Nichols would join Cazenovia teammates Ryan O’Herien, Tom McNearney (both juniors) and Alec Boone (a freshman) in the 4×100 relay, where the Lakers, in 46.36 seconds, held off Solvay (46.45 seconds), Marcellus (46.53 seconds) and Canastota (46.66 seconds) in a tight four-way finish.
Then it was Satchwell’s turn to shine. In the 800-meter run, Satchwell gradually pulled away and, in a time of two minutes, 4.29 seconds, beat Solvay’s Eric Goodrich (2:06.03) and the rest of the field.
All told, Cazenovia had 49 points to gain sixth place among the 10 Class B-1 sides. Solvay, earning 140 points, pulled away from Phoenix (99 points) to repeat its sectional team title.
Zach Morris competed in the five-event pentathlon for Cazenovia, earning 1,759 points and finishing fifth as Canastota’s Harley Whitmeyer, with 2,435 points, prevailed.
O’Herien used a time of 11.88 seconds to qualify for the 100-meter final and, once there, he took eighth place, with 11.98 seconds, also getting seventh place (38’2”) in the shot put, where Reed Lucas was 10th, Sawyer Hunt 11th and Garrett Hansen 12th.
McNearney was seventh in the 400-meter dash in 55.44 seconds. John Nannery, Sam Galasso, Hugh Slocum and Hunter Sattler were seventh (10:23.16) in the 4×800 relay, while Satchwell, O’Herien, Boone and McNearney took seventh in the 4×400 relay in 3:51.28.
