Though it had gone to Marcellus plenty of other times, it’s doubtful that the Solvay boys track and field team enjoyed the trip as much as it did on Thursday, when it sailed past the field to win the Section III Class B-1 championship for the fifth year in a row.
On the same grounds where the girls sectional B-1 meet took place two days earlier, the Bearcats picked up 140 points, with no one else getting to triple digits as Phoenix, with 99 points, finished second. Marcellus, the host side, finished fourth with 58 points.
Solvay’s Nick Cometti won the 100-meter dash, his time of 11.16 seconds enough to hold off Marcellus rival Josh Finch (11.35 seconds). Finch’s teammate, Will Coon, was fifth in 11.62 seconds, and Finch himself would get second place (23.56 seconds) to Vernon-Verona-Sherrill’s Matt McCoy (22.52 seconds) in the 200-meter dash, where Coon again was fifth in 24.32 seconds.
As for Josh Marotti, his big moment came in the pole vault. By clearing 12 feet, Marotti outlasted the Mustangs’ Mike Abbott, who stopped at 11’6”, while Marotti’s teammate, Dan Hatch, cleared 10’6” and earned fourth place.
Solvay took four of the top six spots in the shot put, where Jacob Hook won with a heave of 46’11 ¾” and Frank Pucello (42’7 ¼”) finished third, with Adam Tanzella fifth and John Dippold sixth. Pucello (99’3”) and Dippold (97’3”) were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the discus, where Marcellus’ Matt Raymond took third with a throw of 114’3”.
And in a similar effort in the triple jump, Isaiah Lee won, going 41’5”, while teammate Owen Ryan was second with 39’7 ½” and Marotti was fourth with 38’3 ¾”. Lee also soared 18’9 ¼” in the long jump to finish third, ahead of Garrett Lee, who was fourth with 18’7 ¾” after taking sixth in the high jump.
The Bearcats saw Eric Goodrich, Nate Carr, Colton Francemone and Tony Matysuk go 9:13.45 to finish second to Phoenix (8:47.19) in the 4×800 relay.
Carr and Goodrich joined Cometti and Ryan to get second place (46.45 seconds) to Cazenovia (46.36 seconds) in the 4×100 relay, while in the 4×400 Carr, Goodrich, Matysuk and Francemone were third in 3:41.65. Coon, Sean Kocher, Pat McGuane and Alex Zamojski put Marcellus (3:44.01) in fifth place.
Goodrich, in 2:06.03, was second to Cazenovia’s Sean Satchwell (2:04.29) in the 800-meter run, with McGuane giving Marcellus a third-place finish in 2:06.49. Matysuk contended in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, earning second place in 11:35.52 as Nate Gillette was fourth in 11:49.84. Carr, in 54.85 seconds, grabbed fourth place in the 400-meter dash.
In the 400-meter hurdles, Marotti, in 1:02.85, snared third place, with Kocher fifth in 1:03.52. Also, Marotti was fifth (17.38 seconds) and Isaiah Lee sixth (17.48 seconds) in the 110 high hurdles.
The Mustangs’ Nick Raymond got second place in the pentathlon with 2,311 points, just behind Canastota’s Harley Whitmeyer (2,435 points), with Solvay’s Nick Ferri third as he earned 1,988 points.
While all this was going on, Jordan-Elbridge threatened to win the sectional Class B-2 title, but with 126 points, the Eagles settled for second place behind Clinton, who won with 146 points.
Dylan Whittico, in 52.19 seconds, stopped Syracuse ITC’s Soloman Lawrence (52.87 seconds) and won the 400 sprint, and then moved on to the 400 hurdles, where in 58.07 seconds he won again, leaving Jacob Patterson to take third place in 1:01.97.
Whittico then got a third title in the 200-meter dash in 23.37 seconds, the only time under 24 seconds in the field as Patterson finished sixth. Also, Whittico managed second place in the 100 in 11.47 seconds, just behind Syracuse ITC’s Delee Williams (11.14 seconds) at the line.
Jack Gugel, in the mile, beat the field with a time of 4:36.17, and moved on to also take the 3,200 in 10:08.03, more than six seconds ahead of the field. Gugel and Russell Hines joined Austin Milton and Nathan Hollis as J-E, in a time of 8:32.03, held off Adirondack (8:34.08) and the field to win the 4×800. Hollis placed third in the 800 in 2:05.01, with Hines fifth.
Tyler Jackson earned a victory in the pentathlon, his total of 2,350 points enough to fend off Hannibal’s Sean Lange (2,207 points) and the rest of the field.
Hollis cleared 5’6” in the high jump, second to Altmar-Parish-Williamstown’s Zach Bartlett (5’10”), with Patterson second in the pole vault by clearing 10’6”, behind Adirondack’s Tyler Crill (11 feet).
Brad Marshall, with a top throw of 40’8 ¼”, finished fourth in the shot put as Justin Quinn took seventh place as Mikah Quigley took fourth (109’11”) and Quinn fifth (109’7”) in the discus. Zach Rink was sixth in the 110 high hurdles, with the Eagles fourth in the 4×400 (3:52.88) and sixth in the 4×100.
