With the absentee ballots now counted by the Madison County Board of Elections, it is verified that both of the Cazenovia ballot proposals were approved by town voters.
The fate of Proposition 2, a proposal to change the town clerk from an elected to an appointed position, received a narrow majority of yes votes on election night, with returns showing 608 voting in favor and 573 voting in opposition. But the slim 35-vote difference made the final outcome uncertain since there were a possible 84 absentee ballots still to be counted.
Those absentee ballots — a total of 60 — were counted by the Madison County Board of Elections on Tuesday, Nov. 12. The final vote counts for Proposition 2 were 634 voting to approve and 607 voting to oppose — a difference of 27 votes.
Cazenovia’s Proposition 1, a proposal to change the term of town supervisor from two years to four years, passed handily on election night with 758 votes to approve and 426 to reject. After the absentee ballots were counted, the final tallies were 794 to approve and 451 to reject.
The election results are still unofficial until the county board of elections declares them official next Tuesday, after the military ballots are counted. There are only about five military ballots for Cazenovia, according to the board of elections.
