More than five decades after he started coaching Central New York runners, Oscar Jensen is, suddenly, out as cross country coach at Marcellus. Early this week, the Marcellus School Board decided to remove Jensen, a decision he revealed to his team on Tuesday, a day before the Mustangs were to face Solvay. Ted McCrane, the girls track coach in the spring, will serve on an interim basis the rest of the season. Amid all that, the Mustangs still had to get ready for a busy week, including the Solvay meet, though the turmoil didn’t reflect in the results as the Mustangs swept the Bearcats 19-42 on the boys side and 15-48 on the girls side. Pat McGuane won the boys race, covering the Santoro Park course in 18 minutes, 26.2 seconds. Alex Zamojski was second, half a minute behind in 18:57.4, with Alex Stopen (19:00.9) completing a top-three Marcellus sweep. Eric Goodrich (19:17.6) and Isaiah Lee (20:06.7) gave Solvay top-five finishes, but the Mustangs occupied the rest of the top 10. Mike Brown was sixth, in 20:28.5, while Steve Larison (20:29.0) closely followed. Kevin Pierce was eighth, in 20:34.7, ahead of Matt Strempel (20:37.5) and Andrew Marsh (20:43.7) at the wire. For the state Class C no. 15-ranked girls Mustangs, Rachel Garn held back, knowing she would run in the Manhattan Invitational that weekend. Instead, Emily Townsend (24:11.1) edged Dominique Weeks (24:11.4) for the top spot, with Eliza Bell third in 24:11.9. Brianna Szczech (25:08.7) ran right with Garn as Solvay’s Ashlee Riggins finished fifth in 25:14.9. Shannon Twombly and Schuyler Stuart were seventh and eighth, respectively. But it’s Jordan-Elbridge that sits atop the OHSL Liberty National division, at least on the boys side, following its sweep of Hannibal. The Eagles won 26-33 in that meet, with Jack Gugel taking the individual race in 15:03, eight seconds ahead of the Warriors’ Jason McFarland (15:11). Nathan Hollis was fourth in 15:38. Hannibal had three of the top five finishers, but J-E swept the rest of the top 10, led by Nick Parkolap, who took sixth place in 15:52, two seconds ahead of Hunter Brunell. Dylan Whittico was eighth, in 16:16, with Jacob Patterson ninth (16:27) and Austin Milton (16:39) sliding into 10th place. J-E’s girls also topped Hannibal 23-32 to move to 3-1 in advance of this Wednesday’s first-place showdown with Skaneateles, and once again Abby Gugel led the way, as her time of 17:53 beat the Warriors’ Mackenzie Mattison (18:40) by a healthy margin. Marissa Malvaso and Miranda Malvaso each finished in 20:21, grabbing the fourth and fifth spots, while Emily Kuehnle (20:21) edged out Toni Malvaso (20:23) for sixth place, J-E finishing its scoring order before Hannibal’s Kristen D’Angelo (20:31) got eighth place. Westhill/Bishop Ludden, still cruising in front of the league standings, rolled past Phoenix on Wednesday, the boys winning 15-50 and the girls prevailing 19-45. Kyle Fitch won the boys race in a time of 14:35, edging Liam Rodgers (14:35.8) at the line. Josh Owens was third, in 14:48, followed by Alec Walsh (15:02) and Vincenzo Carr (15:10), with Brian Celeste (15:18) and Dan DeMauro (15:26) completing a top-seven sweep. A close girls race saw Emily Washburn, in 16:37.5, edge Phoenix’s Haylie Virgnia and Genny Corcoran, who both finished in 16:39. Erin Morrell was fourth, in 17:14, with Mary Washburn (17:21), Annibel Coolican (17:27), Caroline Coates (17:34) and Erin Christensen (17:36) close behind and Molly Clark (18:37) in ninth place. Both of West Genesee’s cross country teams ran right up against Fayetteville-Manlius, ranked no. 1 in the state in both the boys and girls Class A polls, and lost a pair of 15-50 decisions to the Hornets. In each instance, the Wildcats, knowing it could not keep up with F-M’s unrivaled depth, made sure its top runners did not expend too much energy and saved its best effort for its trip to the Manhattan Invitational. Mike Richards had the best boys time of 17:46.5, but nine F-M runners beat it, led by David Benman, who prevailed in 17:31.2. None of the girls Wildcats, including Laura Leff, reached the top 10 in that race as the Hornets’ Mackenzie Pierie won the race in 20:49.
