To some degree, the Christian Brothers Academy girls lacrosse team was humbled by its 19-8 defeat to national powerhouse St. Stephens-St. Agnes in the Washignton, D.C., area on April 13.

Yet it also made the Brothers angry and focused, and when it returned to Central New York, it unleashed all of its forces on Jamesville-DeWitt last Monday afternoon in a 17-0 shutout.

The most lopsided contest in this local rivalry featured a much-improved CBA defense never letting the Red Rams get the ball in the net and working hard to preserve the shutout, even after it put things away during a 10-0 first half.

On the offensive end, the Brothers had 10 different players notch goals. Taylor Poplawski and Olivia Pitonzo each had three-goal hat tricks, with Poplawski adding three assists to give her six points for the day.

Marisa Romeo and Maddie Cook both finished with two goals and two assists, while Rachel Perla had two goals and one assist. Emily Ehle and Evie Lopoo both managed one goal and one assist, with Alyssa Pitonzo, Lilly Hunt and Rachel Vercillo also finding the net.

Both teams won on Thursday, though, as J-D rebounded to push past 14-10 and CBA ripped past Mexico 17-5.

The Red Rams were in trouble at Fulton, trailing 7-6 at halftime. But its defense tightened, and Cameron Buck was sensational in the net, making 14 saves as J-D surged out in front.

Offensively, Taylor Fallon, Sam McKenna and Carly Neugebauer each got three-goal hat tricks, with Fallon adding a pair of assists. Madi Alfieris scored twice, with Caroline Kopp and Meghan Byrnes each getting a goal and two assists. Kailen Prosak added a goal, while Carly Stone got two assists.

As for CBA, it gained a 10-2 edge on Mexico by halftime and never looked back, Romeo and Poplawski each scoring four goals and combining for five assists. Perla, Vercillo and Amanda Fess had two goals apiece, with Alyssa Pitonzo, Adrianna Fess and Katie Anderson notching single goals. Hunt and Olivia Pitonzo both had a pair of assists.

Meanwhile, East Syracuse-Minoa was back in action, against Cortland, and playing tough defense all the way through a 10-3 victory over the Purple Tigers.

ESM’s goalie, Courtnee Notaro, was sensational, turning back 13 of the 16 shots she faced. The Spartans’ attack did enough, too, steadily building a 7-2 halftime lead and cruising the rest of the way.

Sam Dooling led with three goals and one assist, with Katy Steigerwald adding two goals and one assist. Kate McGarrity, Morgan Young, Haley DeVona, Nicole DeVona and Rachel Toole each scored once, with Toole adding a pair of assists. Megan Legro and Ashley Scalzo also picked up assists.

On Saturday, ESM improved to 6-1, smashing New Hartford 17-2 as it blanked those other Spartans in the second half, staying sharp even after it took a 9-2 first-half lead.

Haley DeVona had a season-best five goals, while Dooling and Legro both scored three times and Dooling added a pair of assists. Toole added two goals and one assist as Young, McGarrity, Scalzo and Steigerwald earned single tallies. Nicole DeVona had three assists.

But CBA would trip up at home, falling to Section V power Honeoye Falls-Lima 9-7. Essentially, the Brothers paid the price for a poor first half as HF-L roared out to an 8-2 lead, and then held on late against the Brothers’ charges.

Only Romeo, with three goals and one assist, found the net more than once. Poplawski was contained well, getting just one goal to match Perla, Fess and Alyssa Pitonzo, with Ehle adding an assist.
