Snow flew and winds howled, but that didn’t matter. The Skaneateles boys track and field team still had important work to do.
The Lakers began its 2013 season by venturing to Monday’s Tully Spring Break Invitational. Amid the wild weather, it picked up a pair of victories and many other high finishes.
Individually, Max Dwyer beat the field in the 200-meter dash. In a tight race, Dwyer crossed the line in 25.90 seconds, just ahead of Phoenix’s Kyle Fisk, who was second in 25.96 seconds. Dwyer’s teammate, Jeff Kringer, was fifth (27.37 seconds) and Tommy Hagen was ninth.
Later, in the 4×100 relay, Dwyer, Kringer, Nick Hook and Nick Smolenski teamed up and, in 49.89 seconds, easily beat a thinned-out field where host Tully (52.87 seconds) claimed the runner-up spot. Smolenski, Hook, Hagen and Dan Wolfanger were third (3:55.36) in the 4×400 relay.
Nate Molnar contended for the top spot in the shot put, throwing it 39 feet 8 ¼ inches, which put him second behind Phoenix’s Jason Czyz, who won in 42’5”. Nick Kochan, in the 100-meter dash, sprinted to third place in 12.56 seconds, with Scott Harrop 11th and Justin Dick 12th.
Hook cleared 5’4” for seventh place in the high jump, while Chris Neihbur finished ninth in the varsity mile and Luke Leubner was ninth in the novice mile.
