Liverpool’s duo of Ore Akinpelu and Morgan Mahoney, and Cicero-North Syracuse’s duo of Mark Broughton and Javielle Fanizzi, would each earn individual victories during Wednesday night’s Section III state qualifier at SRC Arena.

In doing so, they, along with the Warriors’ 4×200 relay team, were among those earning trips to Cornell University’s Barton Hall to compete in the March 2 state indoor track championships.

Akinpelu struck on two fronts. Individually, she would record a time of 41.80 seconds and beat the field in the 300-meter dash as Baldwinsville’s Cierra Allen (42.13 seconds) was second among Division I (large school) competitors.

Later on, in the 4×200 relay, Akinpelu teamed with Catherine Rowell, Jazmine Herbert and Tammy Brodie as Liverpool roared to victory in 1:47.39, again with B’ville (1:49.94) second among the large schools.

Mahoney would win the Division I portion of the 3,000-meter run. Though second to Fabius-Pompey’s Erin McConnell (who won in 10:19.49), Mahoney, with her time of 10:25.15, beat everyone else, including teammate Abby McNamara, who was fourth in 10:47.74.

Moving to field events, Fanizzi, a freshman, was victorious for C-NS in the triple jump, where her best leap of 36 feet ½ inch easily held off West Genesee’s Brianna Richardson (35’4 ¾”) and the rest of the field. Fanizzi added an eighth (15’1 ½”) in the long jump, where Brodie (14’9 ¼”) was 10th.

Liverpool’s Alexus Gersbacher was sixth (34’ 2 ¼”), ahead of Fanizzi’s teammates, Hannah Szumloz (33’7 ½”) and Jade Jenkins (33’3 ¼”). Herbert (7.72 seconds) and Gersbacher (7.80 seconds) were both unable to make the finals in the 55-meter dash, the same as C-NS’s Jocelyn Greenlee (7.81).

C-NS would get its other victory from Broughton, in the boys 300-meter dash. Broughton claimed the overall race by a narrow margin over the Division II champion, Solvay’s Nick Cometti, 36.77 seconds to 36.78. Nottingham’s Tayquon Hightower (37.30 seconds) was the Division I runner-up.

In the 55-meter hurdles, the Northstars’ Morgan Austen challenged Oswego star Cory Keefe, finishing second in 7.96 seconds, not far from Keefe (7.81) as Liverpool’s Gaurab Bhattacharya was fifth in 8.28 seconds.

Liverpool’s 4×800 relay quartet of Connor Buck, Nick LeClair, Alex Christensen and Jacob Rowell got to second place in 8:34.11, beating Class AA champion B’ville (8:37.35), though both trailed Fayetteville-Manlius (8:19.63).

Moving to the pole vault, the Warriors’ Travis Chewning-Kulick had his own second-place effort, clearing 12’6” to top everyone except Zach Liebmann (Jamesville-DeWitt), who won with 13’3”.

Geoffrey Bell had his own second-place finish, in the shot put, heaving it 46’7” as Westhill/Bishop Ludden star Corey Wilkinson (50’5 ¼”) prevailed. C-NS’s Joe Castaldo (43’1 ½”) was fifth. Also for Liverpool, Mark Vanmarter was fifth (19’5 ¾”) in the long jump, with the Northstars’ Bryson Mayes sixth (39’8 ¾”) in the triple jump.

Christensen made his way to third place in the Division I 1,000-meter run in 2:40.01. Buck was fifth in the 3,200-meter run in 9:54.84, while C-NS’s Anthony Lupia started strong in the mile, but faded back to fourth place in 4:30.11. Lupia, Neil Gill, Bryan Sibble and Evan Russell were fourth (8:44.26) in the 4×800.

Angela Kulpa was third for Liverpool in the girls pole vault, clearing 9’6” as C-NS’s Theresa Brown cleared 8 feet. Juliana Basla gave Liverpool a fifth-place finish in the 600-meter run in 1:43.83, while the Northstars’ Destiny Monica threw the shot put 30’11” to gain sixth place.
