As the culmination of a successful spring, West Genesee’s talented boys tennis brother tandem of Brent and Garrett Boleslav will play in the state championship tournament at the annual site of the United States Open.
They earned this trip to New York City by finishing second in the Section III state qualifying tournament, which culminated Friday at Syracuse University’s SkyTop courts.
A high seed after their first doubles victory in the sectional Class A tournament earlier in the week, Brent and Garrett made their way to the semifinals of the qualifier.
Needing one more win to advance to the state tournament (the top three finishers do so), the Boleslavs beat another brother tandem, Dan and James Miron (Fayetteville-Manlius), in an impressive 6-0, 6-2 decision.
This more than took the sting out of what happened in the final, as the Boleslavs took a 6-4, 6-4 loss to the Skaneateles duo of Ethan Wilcox and Ryan Sayko, who are both going to the state tournament for the second year in a row.
The Boleslavs join Wilcox, Sayko and East Syracuse-Minoa’s tandem of Parker and Brandon Stone (who beat the Mirons for third place) on the state team, along with singles stars Matt Nardella, Colin Nardella (both from CBA) and Jacob Crawford (Clinton).
Together, they go to the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadow, Queens, where the state championships get underway with Thursday’s opening round, continue on Friday with two more rounds and culminate with the finals next Saturday.
