Sprint titles from senior Gina Carnovale proved the main rallying point for the Baldwinsville girls track and field team during Tuesday’s Section III Class AA championships at Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium.

In the 100-meter dash, Carnovale qualified for the final in 12.65 seconds. Then she held off Auburn’s Maggie Doyle, 12.50 seconds to 12.53, for the victory as teammate Gabby Jordan (12.70 seconds) was sixth.

Moving to the 200-meter dash, Carnovale led a trio of Bees sprinters, her time of 25.89 seconds the only one under 26 seconds as Natalie Zazzara (Fayetteville-Manlius) was second in 26.46 seconds. Angelica Tomasello was fifth (26.78 seconds) and Jordan (26.80 seconds) was sixth.

In addition, Carnovale earned fourth place in the long jump (16 feet 3 ½ inches) and nearly helped B’ville win the 4×100 relay, teaming with Tomasello, Jordan and Cierra Allen to finish in 49.64 seconds, just behind Liverpool, who won in 49.33 seconds.

The Bees, overall, claimed third place in the sectional team standings with 70 points. F-M, with its overwhelming group of distance runners, won with 162 points as host C-NS was second with 135 points.

During the 4×400 relay, Allen, Mackenzie Ross, Quaneisha Ivey and Marissa Lathrop finished third, in 4:08.12, while in the 4×800 Kim Cushman, Emily Thompson, Nicole Piontkowski and Chandra Hewitt also were third, in 10:11.36.

Ivey, on her own, landed in fourth place in the 400-meter dash in 1:01.75, with Lathrop fifth in 1:02.54. Ross worked her way to fourth in the 800-meter run in 2:20.85.

Moving to field events, sophomore Emily Soeder, clearing 5 feet in the high jump, claimed third place, while fellow sophomore Carlie McNamara threw the discus 89’6” and earned fourth place. Liz Wisely was seventh in the pentathlon with 1,786 points.
