The quick start generated by the Cazenovia girls cross country team led to tie for first with Christian Brothers Academy atop the OHSL Liberty division, a 4-0 league mark and a no. 19 state Class C ranking. Yet the Lakers could not stay unbeaten, only managing a split of last Wednesday’s OHSL Liberty three-way meet against Westhill and Solvay at Long Branch Park. Cazenovia beat the Bearcats 15-50, but lost to the Warriors 26-33. Malone Gabor won a close, hard-fought individual race, posting a time of 19:07, five seconds ahead of Westhill’s Katie Powers. With Hollie Marcelle finishing fourth (19:40) and Rae Tobey taking fifth place (19:52), the Lakers stayed out in front — at least until Westhill snagged the next five finishing spots and won the meet in the process. As this went on, Cazenovia’s boys team lost to Solvay 19-43 and Westhill 23-36. Pat Dermody worked his way to third place in 16:55, though it was far back of Westhill’s Kevin Zych (15:41) and Solvay’s Matt Fedrizzi (15:45).
