J-D/CBA, F-M wrestlers compete in holiday tournaments

Rams seventh at Spencerport led by Dadey win at 215 pounds

On consecutive days the Jamesville-DeWitt/Christian Brothers Academy and Fayetteville-Manlius wrestling teams took part in large-scale holiday tournaments.

Going first on Dec. 27, J-D/CBA went to Spencerport High School for the Teike-Bernabi Tournament, where it finished seventh in a 23-team field earning 162.5 points, Carthage (279) beating Hilton (278.5) by half a point for the top spot.

Bryce Dadey was victorious at 215 pounds, pinning Byron-Bergen’s J.C. Starowitz late in the first period of their semifinal before a title bout where he shut out Wayne’s Aidan LeStrange 4-0 to keep his record undefeated at 16-0.

Max Griffin, at 131 pounds, blanked Trey Pfeiffer (Iroquois) 17-0 in the semifinals but lost his final to Hilton’s Jon Testa 20-4. Similarly, at 285 pounds Mykola Fabian got a semifinal pin over Homer’s Jack Brown, reaching a title bout where Carthage’s Kamdyn Dorchester beat him 9-0 to secure the Comets’ team title.

Dominic Schiano earned third place at 124 pounds when he blanked Griffen Freeman (Rush-Henrietta) 7-0 in the consolation bracket final. It was the Rams’ only other top-six finish.

F-M then joined the 20-team field at SUNY Oswego’s Laker Hall for the Dec. 28 Kenneth Haines Memorial Tournament, where it finished 11th with 96.5 points.

A tense semifinal at 124 had the Hornets’ Joe Rafuse edge Cicero-North Syracuse’s Kasey Kalfass 3-2 to reach the finals, where he lost 19-3 to Newark Valley’s Trevor Middendorf.

Harrison Schwab added a fourth-place finish at 170 pounds after he nearly got to the title bout, beaten 11-8 in a close semifinal by Holland Patent’s Jaxson Koenig. Eric Kozlowski added a fourth at 138 pounds.
