MOUNT MARKHAM – Tradition for the Fayetteville-Manlius cross country teams usually meant going to the Section III Class A championships and using it as a stepping stone for state and national honors.
And the Hornets would find success at this year’s edition of the sectional meet at Mount Markham High School, though not quite in the manner of years past.
In the girls sectional Class A race past champion Izzie Sullivan put up a time of 18 minutes 3.5 seconds, but that left third behind Auburn’s Kyleen Brady (17:38.2) and Liverpool’s Taylor Page (18:03.5).
Jordan Giannetti finished seventh in 18:26.9, grabbing the fifth and final individual spot for the sectional All-Star team for this Saturday’s state championships at Queensbury as F-M, team-wise, was third with 75 points, trailng a close battle at the top where Liverpool (49 points) edged Auburn (50 points) for the title.
Behind Sullivan and Giannetti, the Hornets had Camille Ryan take 10th place in the team standings and 11th overall in 18:52.9. Claire McDonald, in 19:23.9, also finished inside the individual top 20 as Catie Edwards went 20:37.5.
Before this, there was the Class A sectional boys meet where Will Ditre and Kevin Heller both earned trips to the state meet as Ditre finished fifth in 15:49.5 and Heller was right behind, getting sixth place in 15:53.7.
They will join two Nottingham runners, Henry Zhe-Heimerman and Coen Fierke, along with Liverpool’s Josh Vang on the sectional all-star team at the state meet.

The boys Red Rams were sixth out of 13 teams in Class B in large measure due to the work of Ryan Carter, who made his way to 10th place posting a time of 17:15.9. Peter Drew finished 35th in 18:16.8, the only other J-D runner inside the top 40.
