A busy and successful regular-season campaign for the Chittenango girls tennis team resulted in the OHSL Freedom division regular-season championship. Now the Bears entered the Section III Class B team tournament as the no. 4 seed, starting the right way in Wednesday’s opening round with a 5-0 sweep of no. 13 seed Ilion. In the trio of singles matches, Ami Petosa blanked Mikala Stubley 6-0, 6-0, while Shelby Bogle rolled past Samantha Gruzzi 6-1, 6-1. Sierra Sleight put together a 6-2, 6-0 sweep of Teresa Burrello. Over in doubles, Chittenango was close to perfect. Megan and Erin McPeak shut out Vanessa Roach and Rachel Stegemann 6-0, 6-0, while Brandyn McDermott and Tanya Cziesler beat Kaleigh Engert and Brittney Jory by those same scores. In the Class B quarterfinals on Thursday, Chittenango met no. 5 seed Christian Brothers Academy and, just as suddenly, would see its title run end in a 5-2 loss to the Brothers. Both points came in doubles, where McDermott and Cziesler beat Lauren Mastroeni and Laura Bulman 6-2, 6-2. Also, Elisabeth Posthill and Kaleigh Koegel topped Rebecca Scullin and Shannon Fitch 6-4, 6-3. Elsewhere, Danielle Glasso and Haley Landers lost in three sets to Taylor Procopio and Sarah Kitts 1-6, 6-4, 10-8. The McPeaks lost in straight sets, while the singles’ trio of Petosa, Bogle and Sleight could not pick up a set between them. Oneida, the no. 11 seed in Class B, lost in the first round to no. 6 seed Jamesville-DeWitt 7-0, unable to win a set in any of the matches. Kelcie O’Neil and Chelsea Smith had the best shot in a 6-3, 6-3 defeat to Katie Cieplicki and Stella Min. In other Tri-Valley League matches, Oneida edged Whitesboro 4-3 and toppled Clinton 6-1, with Victoria Griffith going 2-0 in singles matches that featured single sets to 10 games. Emily Fitzgerald twice won in doubles — once with Shannon Lawless, the other with Brittany Buschatzke. Though not in the sectional tournament, Vernon Verona Sherrill still had matches to deal with, falling to Clinton 4-3 on Wednesday afternoon. All the Red Devils’ points came in doubles, where Cailee McWilliams and Taylor Salamone needed a third-set tie-breaker to beat McKenzie Taylor and Leah Tonnetti 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2). Stephanie Thompson and Jenna Fiacco also went to three sets, beating Emily Motyka and Abbey Warfel 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, while Brooke Cavanaugh and Amanda Emmerich handled Stephanie Mould and Alex Hunt 6-0, 6-1. In singles, Jessica Kingsley, Jane Suttmeier and Jessie Hyle all lost matches in straight sets.
