Victories alone are not what is expected of the West Genesee girls lacrosse team. Anything less than total domination would cause a bit of concern.
By that token, the Wildcats had to be concerned about the way it played last Tuesday night against Fayetteville-Manlius.
True, the Wildcats prevailed, 10-4, over the Hornets, its second win over F-M in less than a month. But without the dominant work of Sarah Kuonen, this game might have been a lot more interesting.
Inspired on the defensive side, the Hornets made the Wildcats work hard all night for scoring attempts that normally flowed. Plus, WG ran into a hot goalie, as Lauren Webster made 10 saves, many of them point-blank stops.
F-M did a solid job containing every Wildcat — except Kuonen. Showing the poise and confidence of a superstar, the senior put home three of her team’s first five goals, then assisted on all five of the Wildcats’ final tallies.
This helped plenty of teammates out, as Colleen Bubnack had two goals and Chrissie Hanley, Maria DiFato, Karen Bianchi, Lauren Welch and Kiersten Tupper got the other goals. Tupper added two assists.
For its part, WG’s defense was strong all night. Maggie Yackel, Nicole Perkins, Amanda Corso and Rachel Lasda combined with goalie Jenny Perkins to blank F-M in the first half, leading to a 6-0 margin that the Hornets could not overcome.
WG is home again Thursday to face Liverpool on Senior Night at 7 p.m.
