ONONDAGA COUNTY – Though it might not be all the way to the prime form it experienced when it won a string of Section III titles the previous decade, the Baldwinsville boys soccer team is making opponents notice again.
When the state Class AAA no. 18-ranked Bees faced Central Square in a non-league battle Tuesday night, it noted the Redhawks’ improvement but, with a second-half goal, was able to edge the Redhawks 1-0.
Even more impressive, though, was B’ville’s effort at Nottingham two nights later. Against a Bulldogs side expected to contend for sectional Class AA honors, the Bee were able to work its way to a 2-0 victory.
Though it didn’t have a continual flurry of scoring opportunities, B’ville still converted once in each half, seeing Will Stevens and Greg Ramin pick up the goals.
Assists were credited to Ian Price, Andrew Jung and Jonah McMullen, with the freshmen Price and McMullen making quick impacts at the varsity level and helping the Bees run its win streak to five.
In girls soccer, Baldwinsville would challenge unbeaten Salt City Athletic Conference front-runner West Genesee last Tuesday night and took a 2-0 defeat to the Wildcats.
A stingy WG defense was the main story, tying up B’ville’s forward and only allowing three shots. And though Alyssa Luce made six saves, she couldn’t keep Ellie McMahon and Anna Nelson to put in the Wildcats’ goals.
Again, B’ville found itself kept off the board in Thursday’s home match against Cicero-North Syracuse, but still was able to earn a 0-0 draw with the Bees.
Eighty minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime did not settle matters, with the two sides rarely able to generate close scoring chances. B’ville only had three shots, one less than C-NS’s four.
B’ville’s boys have three games next week, going to Jamesville-DeWitt Tuesday before hosting East Syracuse Minoa on Thursday and Fulton on Saturday at 11 a.m.
Having reached its midway point of the regular season at 4-3-1, the girls Bees went to the Oneonta Tournament last weekend, where it beat Section II’s Troy 2-1 in Saturday’s opening round behind goals from Kelsey Dwyer and Natalie Hollingshead.
Then the Bees topped Section IV’s Horseheads 2-0 on Sunday, only allowing three shots and moving out in front thanks toHollingshead earning her second goal of the weekend and Audra Salvagni also finding the net. Dwyer and Nadia Guzman both were credited with assists.
are on the road next week three times, traveling to East Syracuse Minoa and Auburn before a Saturday rematch with C-NS.
