CENTRAL NEW YORK – Before and after the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, area high school bowling teams made their 2022-23 season debuts and forged a fair amount of success.
In its opener last Monday against Fulton at Green Lakes Lanes, Fayetteville-Manlius boys bowler Adam Koss dazzled with a 752 series, all part of the Hornets’ impressive 7-0 shutout of the Red Raiders.
Koss had a 279 second game with 10 strikes, this after an opening 258 as he closed with a 215. Ryan Yenny had a third-game 199 during a 530 set as Xavier Greene added a 466 series.
The girls Hornets lost to Fulton by that same 7-0 margin, Samantha Estock leading F-M as her 224 second game was part of a 543 series. Rica Armbrister (348 series) and Teagan Hunt (347 series) followed as Miranda Laws, for the Red Raiders, had games of 195, 198 and 211 in her 604 set.
A reversal happened last Wednesday against Central Square, F-M’s girls winning 7-0 led by Estock’s 509 series (high game of 176), but the boys falling to the Redhawks by that same margin.
Koss fell to a 554 series despite games of 217 and 202 as Sean Bird, who opened with a 230, led with a 600 series. But all five Central Square bowlers had series of 570 or better, led by Owen Schlueter’s 679 (high game of 256) and William Allen’s 225, 237 and 216 in his 677 set.
Then both F-M teams lost 5-2 to Auburn on Friday, the boys side not quite able to keep up with a 697 series from Jack Slikwa and 631 series from Eric Barski.
For the Hornets, Koss closed with a 225 in his 578 series, while Yenny had games of 186, 194 and 199 in a 570 set. Sean Bird had a 566 series ahead of Greene’s 536 series and Gabriel Williams’ 528 set. Estock led the F-M girls with a 550 series and opening game of 196.
East Syracuse Minoa started on Nov. 22 against West Genesee, and each of the Spartans’ sides were able to earn comfortable victories over the Wildcats.
During the ESM boys 7-0 sweep, Ryan Buffum, the top returning bowler, opened with a 215 and finished with a 238 during a 629 series. Luke Liedka had a 531 series as Alex Locke shot 208 in his lone game.
As that went on, the girls Spartans beat WG 5-2, led by a 408 series from Alana Turbeville. Jewelianna Hallock finished with a 386 series as Maddison Jewett had a three-game total of 352.
Back in action a week later against Cicero-North Syracuse, ESM’s girls lost 7-0, but the boys Spartans were able to pick up a 5-2 victory over the Northstars.
Buffum, in tough late conditions, shot 235 to open, followed with 209 and 191 as his 635 series led all individuals. Liedka closed with 205 and 208 games in his 570 series as Locke had a 525 series and Joe Gardner shot 189 as part of a 511 series. Jacob Calabria (588 series) and Nehemiah Bachman (565 series) paced C-NS.
Bishop Grimes got underway last Wednesday against Weedsport, winning the girls match 7-0 led by a 374 series from Alla Koudadje and 371 series from Tori Coppola. Dom Beitz led the boys Cobras with a 450 series as Greg Docos had a 419 set during a 7-0 loss to the Warriors.
Grimes’ girls then beat Solvay 5-2, with a154 from Koudadje that was part of a 396 series, while the boys Cobras had a 7-0 defeat to the Bearcats.
Christian Brothers Academy lost both sides of its match with Homer on Thursday, the girls falling 5-2 as Eliana Occhino closed with a 183 in her 508 series and beat the top boys series of 466 from the Brothers’ Tom Dearnaley.
