CENTRAL NEW YORK – Through four games, the Cicero-North Syracuse girls soccer team had rolled through all of its opponents by a combined 19-2 margin.
And the Northstars would stay in top form in its only game last week, traveling to West Genesee and, pouncing on its opportunities, not letting up until it had shut out the Wildcats 3-0.
Even as it sprinted to a 2-0 halftime advantage, C-NS found itself absorbing a steady amount of attacks from WG’s side. Through it all, the defense kept its poise and Avery Byrnes turned away all nine of the Wildcats’ shots.
A second-half goal only reinforced the Northstars, with Tori Iannotti scoring twice and Maddy Jackson getting the other goal.
Now C-NS headed to the Wright National Soccer Complex in Oneonta for a pair of weekend games against Oneonta and Westhill before taking on Baldwinsville and Whitesboro this week.
Liverpool also found itself in Oneonta for the same weekend tournament, taking on the host side after facing Elmira and claiming that game 2-1 on goals by Grace Muller, one in each half.
All of this followed last Thursday’s non-league game against Skaneateles, where the Warriors surrendered a lead late in regulation, but persevered and eventually topped the Lakers 2-1 in overtime.
Mia Wright’s goal in the first half had put Liverpool in front. It stayed that way until the second half, when Grace Bailey, off a feed from Kathleen Reed, tied the match 1-1.
Regulation ended that way, as did the first of two 10-minute extra periods. But in the second OT, Wright flew into the Lakers’ end and flicked a shot that eluded Skaneateles goalie Bridget Carroll and found the net.
At the start of its own weekend tournament at the Wright National Complex, C-NS jumped all over the host team, Oneonta, with four first-half goals.
Ultimately beating the Yellowjackets 5-0, the Northstars saw McKenna Slate scored twice, with single goals going to Jackson, Emilee Rio and Ellysia Germain. Iannotti got two assists. Carly Trotman and Bri Dorrance each got one assist.
A day later, it was C-NS topping Westhill 4-0 with a first-half scoring blitz led by Germain, who converted twice. Slate and Juliana Marullo also earned goals, with Iannotti, Ashley Evans and Kristyn Dallman also picking up assists.
Liverpool managed to beat Oneonta by that same 4-0 margin for its third win in four days. Spreading its attack around, the Warriors got goals from Muller, Alexa Marsh, Julianna Colavita and Ciarra Fox, with Ashlyn Brown, Cameron Thompson and Isabella Melfi each getting one assist.
