ONONDAGA COUNTY – Though it was competing for the third time in eight days,both of the the East Syracuse Minoa track and field teams had enough in the tank to gain big wins over Central Square.
The boys meet went 72-68 in the Spartans’ favor, and Rocky El was, as usual, at the forefront for ESM against the Redhawks, winning three events as he took the 100-meter dash in 11.7 seconds, the 110 hurdles in 16.0 second and the triple jump by going 42 feet 7 ¼ inches.
Bennett Ferrari stood out, too, sweeping to first in both the 400-meter dash (56.2 seconds) and 400 hurdles, while Kevin Hasty threw the shot put 36’6 1/2” and the discus 97’7” to take both events.
Aidan Hirt, who finished first in the 200-meter dash in 23.8 seconds, paired with El, Ferrari and Todd Durantini to take the 4×100 relay in 45.8 seconds, with Hirt, Ferrari, Sol Scofield and Dan Tovar winning the 4×400 in 3:43.6.
It was just as close in the girls meet, and ESM won here, too, getting past Central Square 73-67 as Rylie King won twice, going 28.6 seconds in the 200 and taking the 100 sprint in 13.3 seconds.
Sophia Jackson threw the discus 95’2” as Aryanna Finkelstein had a top shot put toss of 29’4 1/2”, while Arianna Brennen cleared 4’10” for first place in the high jump.
Rachael Ladd won the 400 hurdles in 1:22.5, right after Elena Vespi, Allyana O’Brien, Lilia Pena and Rebecca Sergeant went 4:44.4 to prevail in the 4×400 relay. Julia Mann led Central Square with titles in the 400 sprint, 3,000-meter run and triple jump.
Jamesville-DeWitt will have its meet against ESM on Wednesday, but first had its own set of league challenges to face, starting with PSLA-Fowler.
The girls Red Rams beat the Falcons 95-33 on May 15, with Madeline Carter first in the 100 (13.6 seconds) and 200 (28,4) sprints as Madeline Foss beat the field in the 1,500 in 5:22.3 and the 3,000 in 11:50.3.
Maeve Murphy (long jump), Sophia Commandeur (triple jump), Brooke Hulbert (400 hurdles), Lucy Heflin (pole vault), Amarise Rodriguez (discus) and Cadence Milligan (100 hurdles) and Jillian Kordas (800) also won events.
J-D then swept Oswego on Wednesday, prevailing in a close girls meet 71-66 while topping the Buccaneers 91-41 in the boys meet.
With every victory important in the girls meet, J-D saw Foss win the 1,500 in 5:23 flat and the 3,000 in 11:47.3 as Kordas claimed first place in the 800 in 2:42.6 for a sweep of the distance races.
Carter improved to 13.5 seconds in the 100 sprint, with Milligan first in the 100 hurdles in 19.3 seconds. Hulbert won the 400 hurdles in 1:18.5 and Heflin cleared 8 feet to take the pole vault.
Meanwhile, Sam Smith gave the J-D boys a 6-foot high jump and a long jump of 21’3”, while Caleb Smith ran the 100 in 11.3 seconds and helped the Rams’ 4×800 (9:10.2) and 4×400 (3:44.6) relay sides prevail.
Daviel Cruz threw the discus 100’6” as, in the distance races, John Moore ran the 800 in 2:09.5, Jacob Cottet took the 1,600 in 5:01 flat and James Hillers was first in the 3,200 in 11:22.7.
Fayetteville-Manlius swept West Genesee ast Wednesday, easily winning the girls meet 106-31 but holding off the Wildcats 71-65 in the boys meet.
For the girls Hornets, Hannah Kaercher ran the 1,500 in 4:40.3 and the 3,000 in 10:07.1. Maya McKenzie swept to wins in the 100 (12.5 seconds) and 200 (27.5 seconds), with Samantha Pynn going 16’1” in the long jump and 32’8” to win the triple jump and Harper Stoppacher clearing 5’4” in the high jump.
Other wins went to Fiona Mejico (400 sprint, 1:02.8), Natalee Barber (100 hurdles, 16.5) and Elizabeth Bansbach, who took the 400 hurdles in 1:18.5.
In the closer boys meet, Peyton Geehrer ran the 1,600 in 4:40 flat and the 3,200 in 9:34.4, while Will Seamans took the 800 in 2:05 flat and helped the Hornets go 3:43.0 in the 4×400 to win that race.
Geehrer and Seamans were on F-M’s 4×800 side that posted 8:41.7 as Jack Altimonda swept the shot put (33’4”) and the discus, where he heaved it 99’8”. Michael Magee won the high jump (5 feet) and went 1:01.2 in the 400 hurdles. Ben Hutz was first in the 400 sprint in 56.4 seconds.
