ONONDAGA COUNTY – Nearly 23 months ago on the turf at Liverpool High School, the Jamesville-DeWitt boys lacrosse team claimed the Section III Class C championship at the expense of Christian Brothers Academy.
One lost season later, the Brothers and Red Rams reunited on the first afternoon of May on the turf at Alibrandi Stadium, keen to find out where they both stood.
J-D arrived at this game with a blemish courtesy of reigning sectional Class A champion Baldwinsville, who knocked off the Red Rams 11-6 in last Thursday’s season opener at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium.
Already with a game in the win column (it beat Liverpool two nights earlier), the Bees mostly leaned on its defense to keep J-D quiet, holding them to a single goal in each of the first three quarters.
Unable to overcome those struggles, the Rams saw six different B’ville players convert, with Colin Socker and Luke Hoskin leading the way as they had three goals apiece, while goalie Cooper Foote stopped 11 of J-D’s 17 shots.
CBA, meanwhile, was supposed to open at Cazenovia, only to have heavy midweek rains move the game away from the grass at the Sean Goggin Sports Complex to the turf at Alibrandi.
Glad to be home, the Brothers pulled away to beat the Lakers 15-4, a game that was just 1-1 after one period and 4-2 at halftime before CBA, with constant possession and balanced scoring, wore Cazenovia’s defense down.
Dan Ludington had four goals and one assist, with Joe Papa getting three goals and two assists. Dan Anderson and Declan Landers also had three-goal outings as Anderson got a single assist.
Andrew Kohlbrenner scored twice, adding an assist. Chris Adornato gained a team-best three assists and Bracton Bowler also had an assist as Matt Craybas was superb in goal, stopping 11 of the Lakers’ 15 shots.
As CBA and J-D went through its busy opening week, East Syracuse Minoa practiced and would open on Tuesday against Cortland at Spartan Stadium before hosting Auburn on Thursday.
