Cazenovia Counterpoint congratulates the Village of Cazenovia on being honored as one of ’20 Small Towns in America That Are Stuck in Time’, according to the latest list of exceptional small towns in TripAdvisor. Does anyone know if any of the other top ’20 small towns in America’ have an arts festival that features all new music, art, writing and opera?
Cazenovia may be ‘stuck’ in keeping the historical quality of the village, but ‘un-stuck’ when it comes to creating music and art for the future, not to mention mentoring young artists, musicians and composers who will represent CNY with pride.
Coming up the week of July 16 is the Young Composers Corner at Cazenovia Library, led by Syracuse native Nik Allen Jeleniauskas, earning his doctorate at Eastman. July 17 is Writers Corner at St. Peter’s with Antoinette Brim, a Rising Star in the literary world.
July 18 is Rising Stars at St. Peter’s featuring composer/violist Sachin Shukla, pianist Bradley Zell, paired with composer/pianist Gregg Welcher, and Dominic Fiacco, organist, paired with composer/pianist Emmanuel Sikora. All CNY natives.
July 20 marks the second performance of the Matilda Joslyn Gage opera, commissioned by the Society for New Music on a NYS RedC grant with music by Persis Vehar. The drama brings to life the important history that took place in CNY in the latter half of the 19th Century.
Experience first-hand the vision, courage and hard work these heroic figures embodied to bring about women’s right to vote. That production travels to Seneca Falls July 21 for a performance in Wesleyan Chapel, celebrating the 170th anniversary of the signing of Declaration of Women’s Rights; part of the Park’s Conference weekend.
The culminating event of Caz Counterpoint is Family Arts Day at Stone Quarry Hill Art Park July 22. Beginning with a Poetry Round-Robin (all welcome to come read), a Writers Corner with Cheryl Reed and Stephanie Storer, performance of works completed during the Young Composers Corner, followed by “Sound Wandering III.” The varied groups performing at sculptural sites at the park between 4 and 5 p.m. that afternoon are: nXt (jazz), Sachin’s String Band, Cosmic Quartet, and Paul Leary and his musical sculptures. They join forces on the hilltop at 5 p.m. for a grand finale, ice cream and lemonade.
The Art Exhibit is on view throughout the village until July 30.
