Join multimedia artist Sal Strom at the Cazenovia Public Library for a free interactive event combining art, books, collaboration and fun. “Connecting U.S. 20” will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 6, in the community room. This engaging travelling program is designed to link people and communities across the country — from one end of U.S. Highway 20 to the other — through art and play.
Strom’s connection to Highway 20 runs deep. She currently resides in Newport, Ore., and was raised in Depoe Bay, Ore., just a few miles up the Pacific coast from the highway’s western terminus. As an adult, she relocated to the Eastern end of U.S. 20 to pursue a M.F.A. from Massachusetts College of Art.
At 3,365 miles, U.S. 20 is the longest continuously numbered highway in the United States. Starting May 1, Strom and program co-creator Lynn Moyers will begin a month-long road trip along U.S. 20, from Kenmore Square, Boston to Newport, Ore. Their route will be tracked using multi-colored safety pin chains. Along the way, the pair will visit and present this artwork to libraries in twelve states. Each program participant will create one chain as a souvenir and a second to be shared with the next town. The event will conclude with a celebration of local authors.
This program is open to children and adults of all ages. Participants ages seven and under should be supervised by an adult. To learn more, visit http://connectingus20.com or email Strom at [email protected].
