Cheryl Pula will present her “Turning Points of War” series at the DeWitt Community Library this fall.
The first in the “Turning Point” series, “The Battles of Saratoga,” will be at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 29, at the library. The Battles of Saratoga have been viewed as the turning point of the Revolutionary War. In September and October 1777, two battles were fought in the vicinity of Saratoga, N.Y., turning the tide of war in favor of the Americans. Learn more about this piece of New York’s valiant history.
Then spend “Three Days at Gettysburg” at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 10. From July 1 to July 3, 1863, one of the largest and bloodiest battles in the Western hemisphere was fought in this corner of Pennsylvania. In the end, the Union won, and Lee’s Confederate Army was forced back to Virginia. Learn about those three days that resulted in a victory and one of the most famous speeches in American history.
Finally, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 1, take a look at “The Longest Day.” Operation Overlord was launched on June 6, 1944. The result was the successful landing of Ally troops on the coast of Normandy, France. Learn about the planning and execution of what has become known as D-Day, the moment when the Allies began the liberation of Nazi-occupied Europe.
Registration is encouraged for all three programs in the DeWitt Community Library’s Battle Royale history series. For more information or to sign up, stop by the library, call at 446-3578, or go online to dewlib.org.
