The 11th annual Syracuse Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk is an event for the whole family and will prove an enjoyable way to heighten awareness of this disease while raising critically needed funds for pancreatic cancer, America’s fourth-leading cause of cancer deaths. The walk is expected to attract 100 participants. Every donation will benefit The Lustgarten Foundation, the nation’s largest private foundation dedicated solely to funding pancreatic cancer research.
With an overall survival rate of just six percent, pancreatic cancer is a disease with no effective treatments, no early detection test, and unless detected in its earliest stages, there is no cure. Despite these grim statistics, less than 2 percent of the federal funding budget is aimed at pancreatic cancer.
When Sue Hills lost her husband to this disease 11 years ago, she knew she had to do something to help change these facts. Sue, along with her sons, Mark and Chip, and daughter, Tracey, created this event to benefit The Lustgarten Foundation. This past year, Chip was diagnosed and passed away from pancreatic cancer.
“We are grateful for the support of the Hills family and their friends,” said Ann Walsh, director of events, The Lustgarten Foundation. “They have been through so much and yet remain committed to our common goal of eradicating pancreatic cancer. It is because of the dedication and determination of individuals like them that we’re able to not only raise much-needed funding but also much-needed awareness of pancreatic cancer. The Lustgarten Foundation remains dedicated to funding more research so a cure can be found.”
The Syracuse walk will take place on Saturday, June 11, at Onondaga Lake Park. Registration opens at 10 a.m. and the walk starts at 10:30 a.m. For more information and to register, visit lustgarten.org or call 1-866-789-1000.
