CENTRAL NEW YORK – Cold, raw conditions could not keep the West Genesee and Marcellus boys lacrosse teams from notching big victories last Tuesday night against traditional competition.
In the Wildcats’ case, this meant taking on Skaneateles and rolling past the Lakers 18-9, as much a symbol of WG’s game seasoning as anything else.
Playing in its season opener Skaneateles, who went 13-5 a season ago before falling to Westhill in the sectional Class D semifinals, didn’t let the Wildcats get away for a long while.
Though it trailed 10-6 at halftime, the Lakers moved closer in the third quarter, only to have WG take over with a 7-1 closing push led by Charlie Lockwood, who finished with six goals and one assist, and Jonah Vormwald, who won 19 of the 22 faceoffs he took.
Helping Lockwood out, Nash Oudemool and Jake McMahon each got three goals, with Chace Cogan converting twice. Vormwald, Jacob Pensabense, Chris Shoults and Jack Wenham also scored.
On the Lakers’ side, Luke Mizro, fresh off leading Sknaeateles ice hockey to a third consecutive state Division II title, netted four goals. Bradean Taggart added two goals, with Charlie Carbonaro getting a goal and three assists. Ty Calabro and Addison Taggart had the other goals and Luke Logan, in goal, finished with 12 saves.
Things did not turn around for Skaneateles Saturday in a 12-9 defeat to Watertown where it led 8-6 through three quarters before the Cyclones roared back down the stretch led by Kage Loftus (four goals, one assist) and Nico Spaziani (three goals, two assists).
Calabro helped the Lakers built that early margin, finishing with three goals and two assists. Braedan Taggart scored twice, with Tye Kennedy getting a goal and two assists. Mizro, Carbonaro and Landon Brunelle had the other goals.
Marcellus already had a come-from-behind win over Hilton on March 29 in the books before going to Fayetteville-Manlius last Tuesday night and staging another comeback to beat the Hornets 12-8.
In this case the Mustangs were shut out in the first quarter and trailed 4-0. But it made up most of the deficit before halftime and then took the lead for good in the third quarter with a 4-1 push.
Doubling its margin in the final period, Masrcellus was led again by the duo of Nick Rayfield and Chris Doshna, with Rayfield getting four goals and one assist and Doshna notching three goals and two assists.
Henry Lawrence scored twice and got an assist as single goals went to Jimmy Cox, Cam Stojkovski and Beau Lawrence. Donovan Fraher added an assist and Otto Moses continued to dazzle stopping 17 of F-M’s 25 shots.
Far easier for Marcellus was Thursday’s 18-6 win over Tully, a game where it piled up nine goals in the first quarter and enjoyed a 14-3 advantage by halftime.
Cox went to the forefront of the attack with five goals and two assists. Beau Lawrence stepped up, too, with a career-best four goals as Doshna scored three times and added an assist. Henry Lawrence scored twice and got two assists with the trio of Donovan Fraher, Damyn LeClair and Griffin Barney each earning a goal and assist.
When Westhill began its season against Christian Brothers Academy last Friday night at Alibrandi Stadium it could not keep up with the Brothers, taking a 12-7 defeat.
Grady Etoll and Brendan Gilhooley both scored twice, but otherwise there was just single goals by Jack Hayes, Tom Pendergast and Teddy DeMore, who dished out four assist. Jack Wichmann paced CBA with four goals, Ben Anderson adding a goal and assist.
Jordan-Elbridge opened its 2025 season last Wednesday with a dominant performance against Holland Patent, the Eagles putting away the Golden Knights 17-3 before a 14-7 defeat to Midlakes on Friday where Joe LaFluer got three goals and Tom LaFluer scored twice, single goals going to Jayden Castaldo and Ryan Gibbs.
