Wrestling programs at Marcellus and Jordan-Elbridge have both benefited from their combining with other schools, as the Mustangs have done so with Onondaga and the Eagles with Port Byron and other bordering schools.
The combined side still working under the J-E banner began its 2024-25 season on Dec. 7 by going 3-2 during the Brett Dixon Memorial Duals at Central Square.
A 37-30 win over Liverpool opened the slate, with the Eagles taking charge through four consecutive wins by Tyler Chilson (116 pounds), Mason Tanner (124 pounds), Liam Mantell (131 pounds) and Ben Lamson (138 pounds), three of them pins. Adam Delcostello (160 pound) clinched it with a third-period fall over Will Cowan.
J-E lost 53-21 to host Central Square and 41-27 to eventual champion Fulton, rebounding with wins over South Lewis 48-24 and Camden 54-9 as, against the Blue Devils, pins went to Delcostello (at 160 pounds), Tanner, Mantell, Lucas Witter (152 pounds), Drake Allen (170 pounds), Glen Sanchez (190 pounds), Ethan Sanchez (215 pounds) and Noah White (285 pounds).
Marcellus, when it traveled to the Captain Tony Bailey Memorial Tournament at Adirondack High School in Boonville, saw Elliott Barbosa and Chris Doshna both win titles.
Barbosa, at 190, took just 26 seconds to pin Cooperstown’s Colton Czadzeck in his title bout right before Doshna got a second-period pin of Adirondack’s Mason Sturtevant to win there.
Jack Burton (138) and Ernie Estlinbaum (145) both finished second, dropping lopsided finals – Burton to Hannibal’s Zenon Derocha, Estlinbaum to Dolgeville’s Grayson Eggleston.
Knoll McCoy (116), Blaine Haney (124), Hollis Child (145) and Jayden Abbott (170) each finished third, with Brayden Borst fourth at 101. Dallas Wilson, at 145, and Anthony Decapio at 160 both got to fifth place, with Jake Burton (124) and Charles Orr (138) each taking sixth place.
West Genesee began its season in a big way on Dec. 4 when it took on long-time powerhouse Fulton and earned a 39-35 victory over the Red Dragons.
Max Alexander’s tough 3-2 win over Joe Wardhaugh at 124 in the first bout on the card would loom big as the two sides traded victories until Cole Willis, at 108, clinched it pinning Mac Morey early in the second period.
Pins for WG also went to Austin Fesinger (138), Logan Willis (145), Maxx Fesinger (170), Jack Wade (190) and Omar Almlaiti (215), who pinned James Decare in 52 seconds.
Going to the Mark Stephens Classic at Horseheads on Friday and Saturday, WG went 5-2 over the course of the two days, only defeated by Middletown 41-36 and the hosts from Horseheads 43-21.
WG did prevail, though, over Horseheads’ B team 48-19, then edged Waverly 38-32 helped by pins from Raul Colon (190) and Elijah Apps (215) late in the match. A 42-26 win over Canisteo-Greenwood was followed by beating Monroe-Woodbury 39-30 having Apps, Almlaiti, Colon and Maxx Fesinger sweep the highest weight classes, Almlaiti edging Josue Galvez 4-2.
In last Wednesday’s action WG had no trouble with East Syracuse Minoa 70-6, claiming seven different forfeits but also having Willis, Wade and Santino Sanford (285) get pins along with technical falls from Almlaiti and Maxx Fesinger.
Marcellus put away Chittenango 48-21, getting started with Burton edging Dan Mahle 3-2, though it didn’t take charge until Abbott, Barbosa, Doshna and Caleb Posecznick (285) got four consecutive pins. Borst blanked Tyler Addison 13-0 and Hollis Child (145) did the same to Miles Wilson.
J-E wrestled Thursday against Mexico and lost 38-30 to the Tigers, who won both heavyweight bouts with pins to overcome a late 30-26 Eagles lead.
Chilson’s pin at 116 was followed by technical falls from Tanner and Mantell. Logan Merriam (145) also had a technical fall, Witter following up by beating Tanner Bellomo 15-9 and Allen, moving up to 190, pinning Owen Gilbert.
In girls wrestling, WG defeated Homer 30-24 getting pins from Marlee Sherman at 126 pounds and Layla Meany at 160 pounds along with a technical fall at 132 pounds from Riley Butler. But the Wildcats fell to Cicero-North Syracuse
However, the Wildcats lost, 40-18, to C-NS, a match where Meany and Butler won again, Meany pinning Aniyah Burton in 95 seconds, while at 114 pounds Adeline Decapio got a 10-0 technical fall over Alison Tanton.
WG wrestled Friday in the Phoenix Girls Scramble and earned 20.5 point, most of them from Butler getting to the finals at 126 before Fayetteville-Manlius’ Lacey Teaken beat her with a pin.
