CICERO – It only took one meet for the Baldwinsville boys wrestling team to establish itself as the favorite in the Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division for the rest of the winter.
That’s because the Bees knocked off reigning Section III Class AA and Division I champion Cicero-North Syracuse 38-34 in Wednesday night’s season opener, getting five or six points from all but one of its wins.
In the 131-pound opener Levi Schanzenbach managed to pin Dylan Scammell midway through the second period. Two bouts later at 145 pounds Brendan Fredenburg got his own fall over Anthony Ciciarelli in just 64 seconds.
The Northstars took the next two bouts before Nathan Cali won a wild 170-pound battle with Luke Hogue 19-10, right before Davian Longo’s 33-second pin of Tom O’Connell at 190 pounds.
Beaten in both heavyweight bouts, B’ville trailed 30-22 with four bouts left but knew it would get a forfeit to Cael Bruce at 116 pounds.
Thus it came down to Zach Boudreau and Will Lanson, who clinched it with back-to-back technical falls, Boudreau doing so at 101 pounds to James Conklin 17-0 and Lamson getting a 16-0 shutout of Grady Ellsworth.
They also met in girls wrestling and B’ville completed a sweep of C-NS by topping the Northstars 40-23.
The Bees got five consecutive pins from 114 to 138 pounds, starting with Arianna Leo defeating Alison Tanton and continuing at 120 when Ja’Na Macina beat Liliana Chiarizia.
Haylee Robinson continued this string at 126 pounds pinning Audrey Cayea before Rebecca Greene (132 pounds) pinned Audrianna Williams and Cheyenne Chapman (138 pounds) pinned Savanna Abbott.
Later in the meet Breanna Leo pinned her 165-pound opponent, Bela Maris Price, while forfeits went to Abigail Clark at 94 pounds and Jailey Crysler at 100 pounds.
