CENTRAL NEW YORK – Before it headed into a long holiday break, the Fayetteville-Manlius boys swim team made its way to Baldwinsville, where Jamesville-DeWItt/Christian Brothers Academy had taken a narrow defeat one week earlier.
But the exact same thing happened to the Hornets, who despite its solid roster depth could not overcome sensational individual efforts from the Bees in a 47-43 defeat.
F-M did not have a second-place finish until the 500-yard freestyle, when Ben Matthews, finishing in five minutes, 30.36 seconds, was just behind the 5:27.57 from B’ville’s Jayden Miranda as Eli Kligerman was third in 5:32.08.
James Cao’s time of 1:00.84 in the 100 backstroke was behind the 57.32 from the Bees’ Matt Lange, who had also finished first in the 200 individual medley in 2:06.26.
Swimming in the 100 backstroke, Jack Prendergast finished in 1:12.39 to edge out teammate Vlad Roman (1:13.90), but they trailed the 1:00.85 from Lucas Clasy, who had already taken the 200 freestyle in 1:47.76 ahead of Matthews’ 1:58.70.
Mikey White led B’ville, qualifying for the state championship meet in two different events as he swam the 50 freestyle in 21.99 seconds to the 23.48 for the Hornets’ Derick Wang and added a 52.67 in the 100 butterfly, ahead of Max Vidakovic’s 57.56.
Working together, Vidakovic, Wang, Matthews and Kligerman went 1:36.88 in the 200 freestyle relay trailing B’ville’s 1:30.15, with Cao, Prendergast, Kligerman and Vidakovic going 3:43.02 in the 400 freestyle relay, well back of the Bees’ 3:20.32.
J-D/CBA would rebound from its defeat to B’ville at Oswego on Wednesday night, the Red Rams topping the Buccaneers 93-74 while also getting a 109-54 victory over Pulaski.
Right at the outset, the Red Rams were in winning form as Malcom Britz, Misha Kabunov, Kyler Luyck and Daniel Luo grabbed first place in the 200 medley relay in 1:53.63.
Lucien Zens led on the individual side for J-D/CBA, his 54.97 seconds in the 100 freestyle exactly two seconds ahead of Jamey Turo’s second-place 56.97 before he beat the field in the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.82.
Kabunov would take both sprints, going through the 50 freestyle in 23.63 seconds to Ryan Bannon’s 25.40 and then easing through the 100 butterfly in 55.50.
Huyck, a close second (2:25.90) to Luo (2:25.10) in the 200 IM, would emerge victorious in the 100 backstroke in 1:00.94, while Cameron Corona (245.2 points) and Garrett Fuller (212.9) went 1-2 in diving. Britz and Kabunov joined Matt Capella and Matt Radford to swim a dependable 200 freestyle relay in 1:40.89.
