AUBURN – For the entire season, the West Genesee boys swim team will find itself having meets on the road, a circumstance similar to what the girls team faced in the fall.
Still, the Wildcats were successful in last Friday’s season opener at Auburn, with Ryan Goshow part of four different first-place finishes as WG beat the Maroons 92-78.
In the season’s first race, the 200-yard medley relay, Goshow, paired with Gavin Flanagan, Brady Lee and David Martin, went one minute, 50.15 seconds to Auburn’s second-place 1:59.07.
From there, Goshow went to the 200 individual medley and, in 2:20.45, went 1-2 with Sean Putnam, followed by a 100 freestyle that Goshow claimed in 54.70 seconds, well clear of the Maroons’ Caleb McMillan (57.53).
And to close out the meet, Goshow, Flanagan, Putnam and Owen Kane would claim a close 400 freestyle relay, going 3:48.14, less than a second ahead of Auburn’s 3:49.04.
Flanagan went to the top in the 200 freestyle in 2:02.17 to the 2:05.26 from the Maroons’ Matt Crounse. Martin, in 24.96 seconds, pulled away from McMilan (25.97) in the 50 freestyle.
Ian Grosser edged the Maroons’ Julian McLeod, 1:17.39 to 1:18.36, in the 100 breaststroke, while Martin, Lee, Mason Reichert and Owen Kane won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:46.07, again topping Auburn (1:48.76).
WG is back in the pool Tuesday at Weedsport, the second of four road meets in December that includes a Dec. 12 trip to Oswego and a Dec. 20 meet with Cicero-North Syracuse at Nottingham.
