ONONDAGA COUNTY – For the Christian Brothers Academy and Jamesville-DeWitt girls swim teams, it was quite a way for the regular season to conclude.
These two neighbors and rivals battled one another Tuesday night at J-D Middle School and did not settle matters until the final race, when the Brothers finally emerged with a 96-90 victory.
Still needing to win the closing 400-yard freestyle relay to fend off the Red Rams, CBA sent out Zoe Thayer, Sophia Ciereck, Anna Fuller and Ella Zaryski. In three minutes, 58.58 seconds, the Brothers beat the 4:02.45 from J-D’s quartet of Thearyn Wales, Cora Bright, Lila Schroth and Leah Abrams.
Wales was the only swimmer on either side to win two individual races. She swam the 200 freestyle in 2:06.26 to beat out Thayer (2:08.31) and, in the 100 backstroke, prevailed in 1:04.02 as CBA’s Anna Fuller (1:06.48) was runner-up.
Also, Wales had helped Margaret Lister, Maria Fisher and Evelyn Jones beat the Brothers, 2:01.63 to 2:05.68, in the 200 medley relay before Jones won the 100 freestyle in 56.95 seconds and Lister took the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.01.
CBA countered with Jenna Filhan holding off Lester, 2:27.84 to 2:29.09, in the 200 individual medley, before Zaryski went 26.45 seconds in the 50 freestyle to beat Jones’ 26.75.
Abrams dominated the 500 freestyle for J-D, winning in 5:39.18, while Kayla McQuaid got 237.25 points in diving. But CBA went 1-2 in the 100 butterfly as Madison Ceclia won in 1:08.64 to Filhan’s 1:08.74.
That same night, Fayetteville-Manlius was victorious at Baldwinsville, prevailing 55-37 as the Hornets completed an undefeated regular season.
It started with a 200 medley relay where Elise Wratney, Kate Millson, Kristen Iles and Georgia Langan went 2:01.72, one of F-M’s quickest times of the fall in that event.
Wratney then claimed first place in the 200 freestyle in 2:09.52 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:12.94, while Gabby Dardis also won twice, going 5:58.49 in the 500 freestyle and 1:09.48 in the 100 backstroke.
Langan, in 26.32 seconds, got away from Samantha Roddy (28.35) in the 50 freestyle, with Kelly Liu (1:03.66) edging B’ville’s Mia Rinko (1:03.86) in the 100 freestyle as Langan, Millson, Wratney and Iles won the 200 freestyle in 1:50.87. Iles was second in the 200 freestyle and Millson second in the 200 individual medley.
J-D and CBA were both part of the Oct. 21 Salt City Sprint Invitational at Nottingham, where the Brothers went 1-2 in the 100 butterfly, Ceclia prevailing in 1:07.42 to edge Filhan’s 1:07.49.
In a time of 1:09.34, Ciereck edged J-D’s Emma Paul (1:09.75) in the 100 backstroke before Alicia Snyder went 1:21.67 in the 100 breaststroke.
