CENTRAL NEW YORK – With the Jamesville-DeWitt and Fayetteville-Manlius boys volleyball teams not meeting again until late October, they both went on their separate paths, handling whatever opposition was in their way.
J-D had little trouble keeping itself undefeated – or at least that was the case prior to last Thursday’s match with Cicero-North Syracuse, which took a bit longer.
In seven previous matches, the Red Rams had swept everybody in three, but that changed here in the opening set as an inspired C-NS side, playing at a top level, won 25-22 to get the early jump on J-D.
It didn’t last, though. A tight second set ultimately went 25-21 in the Rams’ favor, and from there J-D picked up its level of play, overwhelming C-NS 25-15 in the third set and 25-16 in the fourth set.
Tim Cooper’s 42 assists led to 15 kills for Luke McQuaid and 11 kills for Avery Kielbasinski, along with Phoenix McBride’s seven kills, Cam Moynihan’s six kills and Aaron Ko’s five kill.s
Carter King led the Northstars with 12 kills, helped by Joey Luskasiewicz’s seven kills and Luke Wieczorek’s five kills. Noah Hendry added three aces and eight digs as Jack Waite recorded 28 assists.
Before this, J-D took just three sets to put away Liverpool as it won the first two sets 25-16 and 25-12 before holding on 25-23 in the third for a seventh consecutive three-set win.
McQuaid earned 11 kills and McBride managed nine kills.Ko got eight kills and nine digs, Moynihan earning six kills and Kielbasinski five kills. Cooper, who also had five kills, gathered up 39 assists.
Liverpool got eight kills from Jack DeForge, six kills from Sean Frawley and 18 assists from Kellen Conway, helped on the back line by Shah Subak’s 18 digs.
Recovering well from the sweep at the hands of the Red Rams on Sept. 21, F-M swept past Baldwinsville 25-13, 25-11, 25-20 last Tuesday night.
Connor Sugar’s 18 assists were complemented by Axex Charmot’s seven asssits and Charles Addonizio’s five digs. Chris Cleary led the front line again, earning 10 kills, Mike McAndrew adding five kills, Kieran Egan earning four kills.
B’ville was led by Nate Mekker’s 10 assists. Xzavier Vanderstouw had seven kills, with Ethan Davenport adding five kills. Brendan Micho got four assists and Justin Diep earned 11 digs.
Then, sweeping Oswego 25-17, 25-21, 25-21 on Friday night, F-M would get 14 kills from Cleary, ahead of Addonizio’s nine kills and McAndrew’s seven kills. Charlie Schroder had five kills as Sugar managed 36 asssits and Sean Kellish had 10 digs.
East Syracuse Minoa, off for a week since a Sept. 21 sweep of Central Square, returned with a come-from-behind, five-set victory when it faced B’ville on Thursday night.
Twice, the Bees went in front, having won the first set 25-17 and, after the Spartans claimed the second set by that same score, it lost the third 25-21.
All of that couldn’t keep ESM from pulling out a tense fourth set 25-22 and claiming the final set 15-13, led by Austin Betts’ 16 kills and Donovan Randall’s 35 assists. Tommy Clonan had 10 digs as Jacob McGuigan had eight kills, Caleb Byrd five kills and Jayce Domres four kills. For B’ville, Vanderstuow earned 13 kills and Mekker finished with 19 assists.
