BALDWINSVILLE – For its second consecutive home meet Tuesday night, the Baldwinsville girls swim team drew a difficult assignment in the form of Christian Brothers Academy.
And while Eva Smith continued to impress with her speed and versatility, the Bees still took a 53-40 defeat to the Brothers.
In one of her strongest races, the 100-yard backstroke, Smith not only broke the one-minute mark, her time of 58.47 seconds was among the quickest in the state this season, nearly nine seconds ahead of any CBA rival.
Also, Smith put up 25.08 seconds to pull away from Ella Zaryski (26.43) in the 50 freestyle while pairing with Olivia McManus, Erin Gruppe and Eliza Gramiak to go 1:50.38 and win the 200 freestyle relay.
On her own, McManus gained B’ville’s only other individual title, swimming the 200 individual medley in 2:27.98 to hold off CBA’s Sophia Ciereck (2:30.55) and prevail.
McManus added a third in the 100 freestyle in 1:00.86, with Erin Gruppe taking second in the 500 freestyle in 6:14.77 as she helped Smith, Gramiak and Caydence Szkotak take second in the 400 freestyle relay in 4:09.37.
Zoe Thayer (200 freestyle, 2:13.36) and Madison Ceclia (100 butterfly, 1:05.70) joined Ciereck (500 freesytle, 6:00.80) and Zaryski (100 freestyle, 57.76 seconds) as individual winner as B’ville would meet Jamesville-DeWitt next Tuesday and then swims Sept. 30 in the Yeti Classic at Webster Schroeder High School near Rochester.
