ONONDAGA COUNTY – Whether outdoors or indoors, and regardless of where it calls home, the Fayetteville-Manlius girls swim team always puts in the work, and is again a prime contender for league and sectional honors.
The Hornets passed a major test Tuesday night against Christian Brothers Academy at Le Moyne College, doing enough to earn a 96-88 victory over the Brothers.
Having opened against Cicero-North Syracuse just three days earlier, F-M had a fresh competitive edge that was needed right away.
In the 200-yard medley relay, Gabbie Dardis, Elise Wratney, Caitlin Osuchowski and Georgia Langan needed a time of 2:00.24 to hold off the 2:01.80 from CBA’s quartet of Anna Fuller, Madison Ceclia, Jenna Filhan and Ella Zaryski.
Then Langan swept the sprints, going 25.65 seconds in the 50 freestyle to Zaryski’s 26.69 and, in the 100 freestyle, pulling away to win in 57.67 as teammate Kelly Liu was second in 1:01.18.
Wratney prevailed, too, her 2:08.86 in the 200 freestyle topping Zoe Thayer’s 2:13.41 for the Brothers before a 200 freestyle relay where, paired with Langan, Liu and Kate Millson, F-M prevailed in 1:49.38 to CBA’s 1;53.94.
Millson earned her own title in the 200 individual medley, going 2:28.50 to pull away from Ceclia (2:34.65), while in the 100 breaststroke Lilian Fowler won a close contest with Filhan, finishing in 1:17.21, inches ahead of Filhan’s 1:17.27.
For its part, CBA did go 1-2 in the 100 butterfly, Filhan winning in 1:06.69 to edge Ceclia’s 1:07.48 before Fuller won the 100 backstroke in 1:05.54 ahead of Zaryski (1:06.83).
Paired together in the 400 freestyle relay, Zaryski, Fuller, Thayer and Sophia Ciereck won in 4:03.12 after Ciereck won the 500 freestyle in 5:50.82 to Millson’s 5:55.84. Sophia Osvoldik earned 195.1 points in diving.
A night later, Jamesville-DeWitt swam against Syracuse City and, moving to 2-0 on the season, prevailed 86-74, the Red Rams led by the versatility of Kayla McQuaid.
Not only did McQuaid earn first place in diving with 248.2 points, she also beat the field in the 100 breaststroke in 1:25.09 and helped Mary Jane Scott, Evelyn Jones and Julianna Piccitto take the 200 freestyle relay in 2:03.47.
Jones won on her own in the 50 freestyle in 26.93 seconds, edging Margaret Lister’s 27.09 as Samanatha Wheeler took the 200 freestyle (2:18.20) and Cora Bright won the 500 freestyle (6:07.59).
In 1:18.60, Maria Fisher held off teammate Anushka Joardar (1:18.90) in the 100 backstroke, with Scott third. Lister, Bright, Scott and Gretchen Olsen swam the 200 medley relay in 2:14.29 before Lister joined Thearyn Wales, Ella Parish and Adit Shah going 4:46.55 in the 400 freestyle relay.
